Looking for any Fort Worth area Firefighters that do this along with there FF job. I am wanting to become a firefighter and need some advice. Dont want to post all my questions on here so if anyone would be interested in helping I would appreciate it very much. PM me or email me mike@whitpm.com
What do you want to do? Most FF use the lawncare business to increase their income and do something in their spare time from what I can tell. You are going the other direction. A few weeks ago you were concerned about employee theft and selling out. How can you keep tabs on employees while being a fire fighter? If you want to sell and pursue a fire fighting job, let me know. I am always looking to expand. I tried to contact you the last time you posted a possible sell out and never heard back.
Not starting anything, just looking to understand you.

Well wasnt the response I was looking for but I will respond to it.
I currently have a full time job and like it but there have been some changes in my life that have made me think again of my purpose. I re-evaluated my life and what I want to accomplish. I have always wanted to be a firefighter but have always found excuses because I was going to TCU and I had knee surgery when I was 14, 16 and 19. However I have rehabbed my knee and realized TCU was great but I dont have to use my degree if I dont want to.
So moving on to selling my business. Well we have all been there and it was a few months ago I was pissed about employees stealing. A lot of the stuff I post on here is to vent. I dont like to bring my business home with me so I use here to vent. People have become more critical so sometimes I dont visit this site very often so some post are delayed.
I love the landscaping industry but I need something stable as well. I am 24 years old and want to do something before it is to late. I would be more then happy to sell my business, accounts, or equipment at any time if the price is right. That doesnt mean over priced it means a fair price.
Hopefully that answers your questions.

I use the one in Garland workforce pretty often. Not so much for lawncare but for other jobs. It's a very good resource but you can also pick up a couple of bums. I would never pick up a Caucasian or A.M. from there. I pay 10+ an hour so obviously it has nothing to with "cheap labor" Its because you stand a better chance of getting a good worker. An able bodied Caucasian thats goes there, more often than not has "issues".
It very organized if you stay in line. The surrounding areas you will get your truck swamped.
A "little english" will also downgrade your choices in terms of a good worker. Sad but true I got one of those spanglish books for landscape terms. If you do get a someone who speaks english, then talk to him. Ask for his experience.
It's a little intimidating at first. You have a thousand eyes looking at you and you have to look them over as well. They are all holding a ticket with their number on it. At a glance you can look for things such as; boots, jeans or dickies, how are they wearing their cap. Its not a science but avoid tennis shoes and someone who doesn't look ready to work.
I haven't validated it yet but supposedly they have a number to give you for the IRS or they can't get in line. I need to find out all that as well so, we should all stay in touch on this issue.
I found a guy last year on craigslist. Excellent lawncare worker. I worked him all summer and I hope to see him back this spring.
A car is also something you can ask for but one of the tricks they all know about is to tell you they have no car. That way you get to pick them up. I've watched several guys walk straight to a car after dropping them off. This is after they said they no car.

I am not sure if this is true or not, but someone once told me that using railroad ties for a garden is a bad idea. That the chemicals they use to treat the railroad ties will leak out into the soil and into the plants that you are growing to eat. Anyone know if this is true or someone pulling my leg?
Woody82986
12-16-2008, 08:20 PM
I used to wonder about that myself. I never knew if that actually happened or not. I can't even count the number of people I've seen with railroad ties around gardens. Maybe that's why they are so damn weird...
Woody82986
12-16-2008, 08:23 PM
Here's what I found on a U of Missouri website about railroad ties and gardens.
Creosote, which is used to treat railroad ties, may cause injury or death to plants that come into direct contact with it. After a few years the effect diminishes. Old, discarded ties do not injure plants (Figure 3). However, injury may occur if ties are still oozing black, sticky creosote or smell intensely. If you are uncertain about the safety of treated lumber, place a heavy plastic liner between the treated lumber and soil used for growing plants to prevent direct contact of plant roots with the treated lumber. Be careful not to tear the plastic when tilling the bed.

They do not require anything from the people who show up. You just have to have a card on file with them like addy and phone number. I hate the Garland one and will never use them again. Anytime I have gone there was at the most 20 people there and nothing but scum.
Now for the past 6 years I have used Plano Day Labor. LOVE that place. At 7:00 you will see 50 people lined up. By 8 you can see 175 to 250 people there ready to work. Like you said you really have to see what you are getting. I am straight up honest cause I don't want to be coming back to drop off a guy cause he sucks. (Done this to many times)
My routine is this. I need a mexican guy that can mow and weedeat and has to be good or I am bringing him back. If you don't say that they will just give you the next person on the list that says he does landscaping and most of the time they don't even know how to start the mower.
Also Plano Day Labor has been on the news. Wish I could find the link. They were accused of pushing out all the mexican guys for work and not getting any word for the blacks. So when channel 8 interviewed (Lordes) she said well no one wants a black to work for them. They all want mexican. I about died. She was accused of being racist at that point by the tv and radio guys. But in reality she is just telling the truth. After that she was not around for a while and they made some staff changes.

what kind of trucks do you drive? I am going to buy a truck this week and i know what i want but i am bored so i thought i would ask what everyone else drove. Currently i have a f150 xl and believe it or not it has lasted five years pulling a trailer everyday. but, i have worn it out and it is going downhill fast. i want a F250 super duty 5.4 but there are some F150's with the same engine, so what am i getting with the F250? beefier transmission, what else? i am also looking at a Chevy 2500. is anybody else bored and would like to chime in on this?

Well ones a 3/4 ton and ones a halfton, so therefore everything is beefier, not to mention a different bodystyle. Engines the same but it has a better suspension so therefore it tows more. If you have to have a gas engine, try for the V10. The fuel mileage is about the same as the V8 and you have so much more power.

I haven't noticed much of anything changing around here, aside from a few more clients saying, "let's wait until spring to take care of that stuff" than normal. Nothing I'm worried about. As far as doing things differently, I'm going to be watching payments more closely to make sure I keep the threat of someone skipping out on payment lower. As far as my lawn care schedule, I have had more people go ahead and agree to lawn maintenance for this year during winter, than I have ever had during the winter months. Overall I am pleased.

Morningside, do a yahoo search for Texas Department of Agriculture. The website will have options to apply for license etc. Start there.
I can tell you from experience that it is not cheap.
You must register your business with TDA as a chemical business, obtain the applicator license, pay for the nursery/floral certificate, plus pay for and attend a continuing education class once per year.
The list above is why there are so many companies and individuals spraying illegally.
Good luck.

Hoots
01-28-2009, 09:31 AM
We all know that government run programs don't make sense.
The floral certificate for an applicator is merely another way for TDA to get another $75 for nothing. The reason I say nothing is the lack of enforcement I see for unlicensed applicators.
One area that needs the floral cert is an actual nursery because they apply chems in their greenhouses plus they are the grower. I don't understand why you and I need the cert to resell. Again there are plenty of companies that buy and resell flowers with no certificate.
The other wonderful thing about our business that most homeowners don't understand is the need to charge sales tax on everything, weekly mowing included.

I might be wrong, but I thought the floral is what you are suppost to have to transport plants from the garden center to the clinet. I thought they said without it we are either suppost to have the customer pick up the plants [yea right] or have the nurshery deliver them.
BTW does anyone know if they offer classes with the test at the end of the class?
I heard the easiest way was to attend one of these classes. Well I went to FT Worth to the Turf Grass Assosiations winter conference because I heard they were offering the course for $90 and the price for each of the three test. When I got there I found out you have to be a member first and that was another $300. Well I did not have a extra $475 so I just went to the exhibit hall and left.

Yeah the floral certificate was brought to my attention while working as an assistant superintendent with my noncommercial license. We we selected at random for a records and facilities audit and were informed that with our category 3A license we needed the floral certificate too. This came directly from a TDA inspector.
I think the biggest issue right now is the lack of information given directly to landscape contractors from TDA.
If anyone has questions about legality, go to the TDA website or send them an email. You are putting your business at risk if you don't get licensed to understand what and how you are spraying. The fines are not cheap.

I am not sure on the testing fees but the price of the license you need is $180. You need the commercial license, register your business with TDA as an application or chemical spraying business(free), nursery and floral certificate $75, and have a minimum $100,000 general liability insurance policy.

The heat doesn't ever bother me. There's no such thing as an average sized lawn for me... but an average normal city lot in a subdivision is between 6k and 9k sq ft I suppose. I average between 36-38 on most lawns. Hope that info helps.

I would say around 38 cuts per year. Also a two man crew can do about 20 to 25 Avg lawns in a day if they are routed correctly.

The only trouble I have had so for is with non-privatly owned commercial accounts. I have lost three this year because of price. In the last few years I have not been the low bidder on these but have won the contract anyway. This year they all went to the lowest bidder. So for all of my residential and privately owned commercial are still with me [knock on wood]. What is bad is that I dropped 27 accounts last year when I downsized now with this three going away it hurts the ole pocketbook. Oh well I have two more new ones to bid on, and one is a past client that left for price reasons but has been somewhat unhappy with the preformance. What has really slowed down around here is the new installs and some of the extras like fresh mulch.

Turfdawg, viewing some of your post you seem to have a good handle on what is going on in texas.
My question for you is. What is the market for Hydroseeding down there? I own a company up here in NH, have been very busy and have grown at a rapid pace, no with 2 machines and 2 crews 5-6 days a week.
My father lives in Killeen,TX and has slowly got into the hydroseeding business in hopes to do some weekend and afternoon stuff, he has done alright, but has had trouble landing contracters with the valume he would like.
is the call just not there? or something else

Texas is a BIG state with many different types of areas, so I can only speak for the several counties around my area. Around my area hydroseeding is seldom done. Our two main grasses are Bermuda and St Augastine. Some of the bermuda can be grown from seed, but it takes awhile to germinate. The St Augastine cannot be grown from seed so that leaves that out. Around the only places I have noticed hydroseeding is on some large open commercial areas such as storm retention tanks and ditch banks. In my area I have layed Bermuda sod 12 months out of the year so this is what is usally done.
Others in different parts may have other views, but out of the couple of people I know that have the machines, it is a very small part of their biz.

The biggest areas for hydroseeding in texas I have seen are with the parks and along new highways. And there are always new sports fields being built in North Texas and new highways. If you could somehow get in the door on that you would never need to look for other work.
On the flip side a homeowner won't water seed properly in the Texas heat or even in early spring to germinate and keep the new turf alive. The best thing to do here is sod it. I am pushing the Cavalier Zoysia. That stuff is the cats meow baby.

I had a demo today of a propane powered 21 honda mower today. It was crazy. I like a Toro witha Honda engine and the company said no problem getting the retrofit to go on the Toro.
Mow time same number of lawns with propane.
Cost of Propane. They say they will sell us the propane at cost if we buy this first year of sales and grandfather our prices to stay at cost as long as we buy fuel.
But this mower had increased by 40 pounds and had a 5 gallon fuel tank mounted on a metal bracket above the engine. Try getting it under tree for one close swipe to avoid using the Trimmer. Not happening.
Then you will have a rough time on hills and forget about going sideways on hills. Hills all together are pretty much out of the question with that extra weight.
The kit was going to cost roughly $600 Sorry not gonna do it.
It did run great though. But man back to the drawing board. check it out if you can find it online Metro Lawn Products from heritagepropane.com
THe good thing is they are going back to the drawing board and we could someday get a cost effective way to Go Greenish with our fuel. Low emissions is a big plus. You may not care about it but it may be a good thing to ad to your advertising pieces.

Door hangers got me one job. Direct mailers have got me nothing. Next is really hard networking! Thats the only way! Yeah, saw it on the news. Sorry, not all of us know him like you do. It is very sad but for us who don't know him it does not hit us the same.
About a month ago, Chris Martinez, a volunteer fire fighter that had a pest control business that lived around the corner from me that was shot in the street by a guest of a neighbor. I knew the guy and traded services with him. It hit me the same way it is hitting you, but to others it is not the same.

Hmm I just through Brandt was a decent size. I thought he had maybe 2 vans. I just see him a lot in the Plano, Frisco, Mckinney areas and thought someone might have seen the vans.
It didn't hit me hard but rather a shock. I mow 3 doors down. Last year I would see there van over there with some guys. I was like man how long does it take to do a condo. They are just jacking around. Had no idea that was the owners house. I thought all lawn care people were rich, lived in big houses, drove trucks with long trailers with everything on it! :)

I wonder if it might be something like what happened to I guy I know a few years ago. He worked in the The Coloney area and mowed my brother in laws yard. He had some workers he had to pay in cash [if you know what I mean], well anyway some ex employees went to his house early the morning of payday and tied him up, tried to beat him to death, and stole the payrole cash. Luckly he did not die before they found him, but it took him a long time to recover.

When i use a new laborer that i dont know, i often wonder if this is the guy i will have to deal with. I was raised in San Diego and delt with people who have had to live in poverty and will take what they need to survive. I know it is messing with everyones schedule, but lets quit wining about and take it when we can get it. We were about 8" behind from last year. I would rather be behind schedule now than go through all the B.S. that was going on with the water rationing we had in 2006, where customers were cancelling the work out of fear of not being able to water their yards.
Clean your office, clean the shop, sharpen that pile of blades, make collection calls, call that lady back who wanted some little extra last week, there is never a shortage of things to do in the office.
Pick the kid up from school and take out to dinner, we will all be busy enough soon enough.

New guy here. A Cut Above Lawn and Landscaping Service is my business.
Great site. Love the pics and info.
I service the Hurst-Euless-Bedford area and recently started service in the Lake Worth area. A lot of growth out there.
I hate mowing, so I'm really selling landscaping and hardscaping jobs right now.
Also, selling a lot of Gutter Guard installations (very profitable). Most people are afraid of getting on their roof. Fortunately I'm a bit of a dare-devil, and I still have the "The mission is more important than your life" mindset that I acquired in the Army.
The love of my life right now is my old John Deer JX85. It pulls me up hills, always starts, and I love that I can disengage the blade without cutting the engine off.
I'm in desperate need of a trailer. Minimum 5' by 10'. So if anyone knows where I can get one cheep...
So, for those of you who hate landscaping and hardscaping let me now if I can help when your customers ask you to do some. I'll give you a 10% cut, of course.
By the way, let it rain. That's what a good poncho and waterproof boots are for.

Man EagleLandscape. I am very impressed. I have read a few forums and its hard to believe you are only 24. I think I read that correct.
So my question is you went to school in College Station so how did you grow your business so big in just a couple of years.
EagleLandscape
04-08-2009, 08:04 PM
When i was in College Station I didn't work on growing my business. Mostly we did like 30-50 yards in the summer, and I had a guy that just did them all in a week by himself. I guess I have had my company for 6 years, 4 while in school, and 2 while out of school.
while I was in school we just mowed residential, and picked up some landscape projects here and there. Just little projects like $2,000 - $6,000. Do alot of those and they do pile up.
When i graduated in 2007, i decided to get serious and go mostly commercial. Really just been blessed beyond belief. Have had the opportunity to meet some key decision making people that I have gotten to know and work closely with. Every commercial account we have, except for stuff with USM is word of mouth referral stuff.
We're still pretty small from what I think. Everyone and their dog here owns a landscaping company pretty much.
We do a handful of banks in Ft Worth/Keller. Maybe we'll run into each other one day,

Looking for an Isuzu NPR. I see more of those than other brands.

It seems like the late freezes this year has really slowed everthing down. I forgot about the overseeded rye, it's going ape s crazy but that doesn't count.

I run a 2 crew lawn care operation here in Arlington, TX. I have decided to pursue other interests and therefore I am looking to sale my business. This business services Arlington, Mansfield, Grand Prairie & surrounding areas. I am looking to sell the business as entire entity, equipment & customers. Here is some general info about the business.
We have about 250 current customers, but have over 750 customers in our database that we have serviced over the past several years.
We have been in business for 6 years.
We have 2 crews that basically do mow and go & small landscaping jobs.
We have about $15,000 in trucks & equipment. (Mowers, trimmers, etc.)
We have 5 employees, and our facility is in Kennedale, TX.
In 2008 we grossed over $170,000 in revenue. (We have documentation to prove all numbers, bank statements & tax documents)
None of our customers are on contracts, however we have credit cards on file for 95% of our current customers. We charge credit cards next day, which makes cash flow much better!
This business can be a nice route for some that wants to get in the business or a company looking to grow rapidly or to expand. This is my baby and have a really hard time even typing this now. However, I know for me in my life now its the best thing for me to do. I can be involved in the transition from beginning to end as for some of these customers have been with me for some time.
The asking price is $40,000. This can be made back within 3 months. This is a great investment for the money. Again, we grossed over $170,000 in 2008. That's not even 1/3 of gross. Its really a great deal, and possibly negotiable depending on the details of the deal. If you have any questions, you can pm me or email me at keith@betterlawns.net. I have a facility in Kennedale where we can meet and you can actually see the entire operation. Again, we have official documentation to prove all of our numbers; bank reconciliations, tax returns, bank statements. I am a reputable business that does things the right way. Please only contact me if you are serious, as this is a serious business. If you contact me through the email, I can give more details and more info if talks progress into that. Thanks for looking, and don't hesistate to ask any questions!!!

Wow. That was a quick sale. I looked at it and waited a couple of days before I jumped at it.
The one thing that had me perplexed is the value of equipment for two crews. 15k sounds like two hatchbacks, a broken residential weedeater and a Murray non-selfpropelled weedeater. That or the trucks and equipment were in need of replacement.
Nevertheless, I was not extended a courtesy call or email to tell me directly it was sold, thanks for the reply now buzz off.
I shall wait for another opportunity.

Are they always like this. I mean in my situation at least 4 cars on one stop stuff like that. Do they make lots of traffic stops etc?
That is why I am so mad. They were sure that my stuff on my trailer was stolen though I had told them the whole truth but arrested me anyway after 45 min.

Well I have had a laptop in my truck for a long time. I then added a webcam because I broadcast my truck live on my lawn care website. People can log on and watch there house and other houses being mowed. It's just another thing to drive traffic. But it comes in hand in a lot of other situations let me tell ya. Want to know what your guy is doing while your in the back weedeating?
I had a case that I used it for when a drunk guy started peeing right in front of my truck. I turned the camera on and recorded it. Then he drove off and I followed him. He ran 3 lights almost hit parked cars on streets and finally the police got in and pulled him over. He was arrested. I turned over my video and didn't have to go to court. You can use it for all kinds of stuff. It would have been nice to have had it on in this situation.

If you broke the law take your lumps and quit crying poor me.
You looked suspicious, you got checked out, you even have priors...
Take it to court and deal with it. Let the judge decide what the law means. If you were this big of a smart a@@ to the cops no wonder you were arrested.
By making such a stink about it you are just looking like more of a punk to the Judge. Request a jury trial. Don't consent to a search.
Know what you are allowed to carry. Ignorance of the law does not mean it does not apply to you.

Jason,
Looking suspicious is fine. I was ok with that. One of the reason I requested all the video is after 45 min I was still there. Even though everything checked out. Carry pepper spray is not illegal depending on who you talk to.
I have one prior for a small fight back in 2000. That is when I was 21 years old and me and a friend got into a fight. Didn't even show up it was such a minor deal.
Where do you think I was this big smart ass to the cops? I didn't get that from anywhere. This hits the news this week and then something happens after that, that I can not let out.

if you go to court get a lawyer and then get that fight ex sponged from your record also
i wish you the best of luck
George
George,
I appreciate the info. But coming from a law enforcement family I know what they did was wrong. They know it. I can't go into many details now because the media is all over it and trying to get the tapes and as of right now they are not being so fast to release them and I know why.
I don't mind them stopping me at all but I was just short of being a police officer per say and I know when things don't add up. Recently another officer from another agency even went to Wylie and expressed his concern over it because what they did sheds a bad light on law enforcement. Now he was commenting on the arrest. You just don't arrest for pepper spray.
But they did it cause they wanted to. There is a lot more to it that I can't say and that is why I want those tapes. When this does come out you will see when and where the stop went south. It went from checking my stuff to getting personal and that is where the arrest came in.

Oh man I hear ya. I worked Thursday of last week and then I worked yesterday and that was it. I hope I am not the only one?????????????
I am tired of sitting at home but then again I don't want to get out there with my crew and it start raining and then everyone expects to get paid for the whole day. I don't even know what lawns I am suppose to do at this time. They are pretty much all stacked up now. I might as well put them all on a sheet and do the ones that need it and skip the ones that don't.

I got a few in yesterday before it started raining so hard it got everything soggy again. I have some foreclosed homes that I am going to go do here in a few minutes. Nobody cares what those look like as long as they get hacked back down. I simply stacked every client on a list and as soon as it stops raining long enough to quit being soggy, I'm going to get to work and move down the list. I already emailed all clients and let them know I will be there as soon as I can get there and we will get the schedule back on track at a later date.

I was looking for my thin pullover... couldn't find it but I didn't spend too much time looking for it either. I toughed it out but I did get a slight chill a time or two. Very nice!

I hope it gets cold this year. This HOA wanted us to clear out a greenbelt that runs along a creek, I swear I saw a few mosquitoes with saddles.

Are there any big residental lawn care companies that service residental only besides Just Mowing? I was just wondering if there could be more then one company as big as them. Also do you feel that it is hard to compete with them?
