Flagstone and sand

We will be installing a flagstone patio (32' x 10') in a brand new home and lawn. Currently, there is about 4" of sand on top of clay/soil. Should we excavate the 6" of sand/clay, then lay 4" of gravel, followed by 1" sand or is it possible to lay the flagstone directly on top of the sand?

Flagstone will be about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1" thick natural shape and weigh about 25 lbs each. Any tips or other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Well the right way would be to install a crushed concrete or similar base, and tamper the whole thing.

I agree w/ Paponte, however would use 3/4" layer of stone dust as top layer to set the flagstone in.

And I agree with Turfdude. Stone dust will actually bond together. Looks neater, and cleaner. :cool:
