I was just wondering what type of vechicle all of you use? I have a jimmy(suv) and was thinking about getting a truck to use instead for lawn care use but i'm not sure yet. Just wondering if there is any good or bad points to using a suv?

I have a 2002 F-250 P/S'er with 373's and a 85 f-150 300 6 cly.
The 250 will pull all of Grassdaddy equipment and the truck and get 15 mpg. Just had to say it LOL:p

2003 Dodge 2500 regular cab 4X4 with a Cummins High Output diesel, auto trans, Line-X'd, E-Z Dumper insert, and Dodge says I can tow 13,300 pounds of my choice.:p :p
The bad points to a SUV are obvious. You can't haul leaves, grass, mulch, dirt, or anything else but if it works for you then it's fine.
Heck, today I saw a caravan towing a trailer that had a Exmark ZTR, along with some handheld 2 cycle equipment on it.

I once had a 85 blazer, pulling probably a 24' travel trailer pass my 99 150 like i was standing still, the 99 I had was the most gutless truck that I ever had, a gust of wind would make it downshift, no kidding. sure like the diesel.

A 2002 GMC 2500HD quad cab 4 wheel drive, 6.0 engine, 4:10 rear end. It can tow over 10,000 lbs and averages 12 mpg pulling a 16' trailer. I had a Dodge, will never own another one as long as I breathe.:D :blob3:

I'm currently using my 98' v8 explorer and it has no problem pulling my 6' x 14' tralier loaded up but I must admit I am really considering buying a truck either a dodge ram quad cab or a ford super crew but I also need to make more $$$ before a purchase like that.

I use a 1996 Ford F-150. With 150 horsepower, but 270 ft.lbs of torgue, It can easily pull a utility tractor or anything else you want. The 4.9 liter inline 6 lasts forever, and has amazing guts for an engine its size. It has only 5 less cubic inches than the famed 5.0 V8. I have a friend with the carbed I-6 from the early 80's, and it was just as fast as his 5 liter Mustang at times. I get 19 mpg in the country, 14 in the city. With no maximum speed either, the tires will probably fly apart before the motor says 'no more'.

I use a 1999 Ford Explorer V-8 that does just fine hauling a 16' trailer. I can keep the hand held equipment locked up when I'm going to be out of site for a few minutes. I just couldn't afford to buy a new truck starting out this year.

I use a gas hog 1995 f250 supercab long bed with 460 v8 engine auto tranny. The damm thing unloaded not pulling a thing gets 7a whooping 7 mpg. I dont even want to know the gas mileage when im pulling a trailer and carrying around mulch etc. Go Diesel.

Rhett? Are you serious a rambler? Lol my friend used to have one of those the thing was a tank It could have probably towed a house. He had to sell it because he moved. But that thing was cool.
Thanks for all of the replys I hope i can get a truck soon but it depends on how much I can get for my jimmy

what engine do you have in the jimmy? is it the 4.3 litre V-6, you should have enough power , the buick rendezvous has a 3.4 litre V-6 and the factory said it would pull 3400 pounds ? i`ve never pulled any thing with it but i might just to see what it will do .

After growing from a Ranger to a F150 and finally to a F250 PSD I can assure any one with a half ton that is pulling much more than a small trailer with very little weight in the truck is not enough truck for the job. I was pulling a 16' trailer with Walker, Toro WB, 2 JD 21" WBs and all the other equipment that goes with it, add clippings or mulch or gravel and a 1/2 ton IS NOT ENOUGH. 3/4 is the way to go.

Yeah I have the 4.3 V-6 But it isnt so much the power that i am concerned about its what to do with all the **** that i may need that I cant put on the trailer. This is my personal vechicle so I wouldnt want to be getting the interior all crappy.

What stuff can't you carry on your trailer. I have a 6'4''X10' open landscape trailer and it holds everything but the grass clippings.
When fully loaded I have a 48'' w/b, 21'' trimming mower, little wonder blower, 2 trimmers, handheld blower, backpack blower, gas cans, 2 rakes, broom, 2 shovels, hoe, edger attachment, toolbox, spare line, bla, bla, bla.
Its all in how you set up your trailer. I have Trimmer Traps trimmer rack and handheld blower holder along with a trailer basket that has loops to hold the hand tools.

Yeah I guess your right Nozzleman I didn't really think about the basket scenario even though I see them all of the time. I would probably only be carrying a wb and maybe a 21'' I would have to get some trimmer racks. I don't know how much they are I might be able to make them who knows. Hopefully this will be my first season so I will have to experiment. I would still like to get a truck though.
Nozzleman
04-03-2003, 11:59 PM
Get a basket first. It holds the backpack, gas cans, toolbox, and all the hand tools. In your situation you could drop your trimmer and handheld blower in it also. After that graduate to a trimmer rack.

No it was at Wallingford Tilcon. I like dealing with Suzio better, I think there very nice people. I was at Suzio one day getting stone and I was talking to Scott Suzio (I didn't even know it at the time) and he seen I was interested in trucks so he showed me all their antique trucks and this man didn't even know me.

But then again the GMC was'nt made for economy, it was built to haul............My last "junk run" to the scrapper was 14,560, total weight, the guy at the scale house about flipped his wig..But the ole'GMC hauled it very well........
