well, i was under that impression, "it wont happen to me".
Last night, somebody cut the padlocks off my rear door to my enclosed trailer, and stole a sthil br400 backpack, 9hp honda little wonder wheel blower, split boom echo trimmer with powerbroom attachment and all my tools! i am steaming! if anybody out there sees this on ebay, please let me know. luckily, they left my exmark lazer and scag and some other things, but it totatled about $2,300 worth of equipment that they got. I dont understand why they didnt take the trimmer and brush cutter attachments that werent locked along with the trimmer. stupid scrubs. Sorry, just had to vent!
Thank god for insurance though.

Could you put a car type of alarm on trailer, type activated by dome light or motion? A car battery hidden somewhere would supply all the power needed.

i was discussing that alarm idea with my father. we were wondering how to go about doing it without adding a battery. anybody can lop locks off, or just cut a hole in the trailer like stated above. i do know they make battery operated motion detectors, which could be a possibility. i had it parked in an office park type area at my dads office, but im going to find a better place to park it. you wouldnt think that type of theft goes on this town, but i guess it does. it seems everywheres i drive now, i take a second look at trucks and trailers to see if i can spot equimpent. ill probably never see it again. guess the power equipment guy will be getting a few sales tomorrow. at least its going to snow 10 inches tomorrow, so i have some time before spring cleanups start again.

I would just go to a local car alarm shop, bestbuy or cuircut city and ask what would be the best way to go about putting in a alarm in your trailer.Would be nice to have a pager type device to let you know when your alarm goes off.

Matt,
I had a 48' enclosed gooseneck that I used to sell NASCAR stuff out of at races. I had an alarm installed that was the same as what they use in retail stores. I had contacts on all the doors and one motion sensor. It had a key pad at the exit door and you set the alarm as you leave. It was time delayed to allow you to get out and shut the doors. I powered it all with a marine battery. It worked great.

I have a wireless alarm that the sensors use radio waves to transmit signals up to 300 feet. I put a door battery operator door sensor on my door so when it opens my house alarm goes off. I have a neighbor who uses the motion detector with a flood light to guard his equipment. I have a Rottweiler for sale lol if that would help. Sorry to hear about your losses.

Matt sorry To Hear But I Got a Couple Of things You can Use If You Get stuck.

They sell alarms that alert a pager. Car alarms mean nothing to burlars anymore. I would look into something more practical.

that sucks balls
well don't feel bad its happened to us.look on ebay or the local pawn shop.look for a scrub landscaper.thats who stole are trailer and one of my mowers.funny thing he lived 3 houses down from my shop plus his truck had front end damage from ramming into one of my shop doors.when i worked for G&H Equipment in north haven it was robbed.some guys stole a brand new freight liner truck with trailer from freight liner in branford and rammed the gate down to G&H and stole 5 lawn tractors 2 425 and 3 LT models.2 ZTRS in crates,a pallet full of trimmers and blowers and they drove away a 4600 tractor with a loader and back hoe,but they didn't get to far with that.the truck flipped on 91 after the north haven and state boyz chased them.everything was damaged.and were used for parts.
get a storage unit or park the trailer in public storage.i park my trailers and back hoe in a fenced in public storage unit.can't go wrong for 120 a month

Damn Matt, that sucks! I hate thieves!
If you do go with an alarm with pager, keep in mind that they have a limited range, so if your trailer's parked far away, it might not be effective.
I just got a new storage unit, but the facility is not secured. Time for me to come up with some ideas myself.

Matt,
An alarm like I had cost around $300.00 installed. It was very well worth it for me because it was protecting about $60,000 in merchandise. If you just have the one door you could get by with 1 contact on the door, 1 motion sensor, 1 horn, the keypad, and the battery.
Get down John
It sure is nice to see that when unexpected things happen, members of the community step up to cover. Rock On:blob3: :blob3:

A good burglar can enter an alarmed vehicle/trailer, steal what he wants and be gone in less than 60 seconds, no matter what. Thats just a fact, I've seen it done to many times. And unless you sleep in your clothes, I don't think there are many of us that can wake from a dead sleep, find our pants and shoe and get outside to do much about it except mf the guy. However an alarm is probably your best bet, at least it'll give you notice that someone is tampering with you equipment.
Just a reminder to all, if you haven't already write down all your serial numbers of your equipment. That way if your stuff is stolen it can be put entered into the national crime computer.
Also, most Police Depts. have what they call operation ident. You can have your equipment marked with a number or code that is assigned only to you. It is placed in an area most thieves won't check when they remove your serial number. That way when its recovered they dont need the serial number to know who the equipment belongs to.
Every year about this time I see new lawm co's. in the area I work. Since I know the legit one's I will contact these new lco's and start talking with them about their equipment, I'll ask them how much they paid for a particular piece of equipment and if its rediculously low I start checking for serial numbers or the lack there of. And guess what, recovered stolen property.
Our auto theft unit last year cracked a big lawn equipment theft ring. They'd been stealing equipment for about 5 to 8 years and would deliver it throughout the midwest by using stolen ryder trucks.
Matt, if you get a chance, go to your local pawn shops. I would bet your stuff ended up there. In St. louis, the crackheads steal light equipment such as yours and pawn it off for cash to support their drug habit. Thaey actually have the quiones to take it right off the trailer while the crew is working.
Sorry to be long winded but anything I can do or suggest to lessen the chances of theft or increase the chance of recovery I feel is my duty.
Hope you recover your equipment Matt.

i was very glad that i had all my serial numbers. the police entered them in the database, and they have notified the pawn shops to keep an eye out for the equipment.

Matt,
We just had an alarm installed in our enclosed trailer. It cost $900 CDN. Both doors have contact pins, and there is a shock sensor on the whole trailer and we have the pager as well (it is good for a couple hundred feet at the most). There is a marine battery setup inside the trailer that it runs off of, it charges when the truck is driving. For another $1000 CDN we will be getting GPS 2000. This is a gps locating sensor mounted in the trailer. You set it up so that it will actually text message your phone and let you know that the alarm is being set off. You can track it anywhere with a phone and handheld GPS unit. The alarm is wired into the lights and brakes. When activated all the trailer lights flash and it locks up the brakes. Check out your local locksmiths, one of the ones here sells a door lock that is extremely heavy duty. The get around it you would have to cut through a wall.
