today i had stoped to talked to a fellow landscaper buddy of mine. His guys were running a 48inch scag walk behind with a 17hp engine and a old jacobsen 48inch walkbehind with a 12.5 kawisaki. There something wrong when a mower powerd by a 12.5 hp mowerwith a 48inch deck cuts 20 times better than mower 17hp mower powering a 48inch deck. The scag was just thowing clumps of grass and discharging very poorly while the jocobsen was doing just fine without clumping and discharged evenly. Scag needs to do something... considering there not very cheap the deck should be designed a little better. The grass was dry so there was no excuss for such clumping! This was just a observation so i figured maybe it could help someone out.

Evan528, are you sure they weren't using my 50" Gravely instead of those Scags? Clumping in almost any conditions is my biggest beef with this mower.

richard, My 36 gravely never clumps at all even in the westest conditions. My 60 graVEly rider i used to have always clumped in almost all conditions like your 50 inch. I guess gravely is just better at designing smaller decks. This scag clumped even worse than my 60inch gravely used to. Im so thankfull i have my toro z master... now they no how to design a deck!

I agreee,my scag is like that with an 18 hp ona 52" deck and my 48" ransomes has a 12.5hp and cuts better. The scag advantage decks not bad though.

You guys need to get hooked up with Eric's TWIN BLADE system
I've got them installed on my 61 inch 25 hp. Turf Tiger and
it cuts like a dream no clumps and it really spreads the
grass out. Do a search on it, I know you love it too!
Good Luck!

I agree with Jerry. I have 3 Scags, 2 walkbehinds and a ZTR all w/ 52" decks. I used to run baggers on all of them becase of the grass clumping so much. This past Spring I started using Eric's TWIN BLADE system and I have not had to bag a lawn ever sence. Cuts great now.

HOWEVER--I have no clumping problems except in conditions that would cause any comparable mower to clump.
my question is ..."is the skag loosing blade speed and is he using high lift blades?"
I have recently, as of this week, bought a bunch of replacement parts for the ole lesco. new belts some new bushings here and there and some other odds and ends. I was loosing blade speed and could really tell with the high lift blades.
in my opinion, if that machine is clumping under average non-clump conditions, there is a good reason. and that's not because it's a skag. good luck.

Hey all you scag users, I thought scag was the cream of the crop especially walkbehinds. I tell you this I have owned an Exmark 48 with a mulching kit powered by a 17 horse kaw. and have had zero problems. Amybe you guys need to look into a higher blade tip speed machine.

I use a Black Rock 48" with a 14hp Kawi. It uses a lot of parts that are the same as Scag. I've had it 2 years, and the only problem yet was the tranny (my fault) and it makes a perfect cut. It was also $2,100 delivered to my house, far less than the Scag. I know, you get what you pay for. I'm laughing all the way to the bank.
