Hey guy's, Got my new F250 4X4 with the 5.4 V8 and 4 speed automatic. Without towing, what kind of Mileage should I expect??? I know it's new, but I seem to be getting about 7 MPG, without towing or plowing............

You will get better as it breaks in, I know you heard it before but thats one of the reasons I went with the diesel. does'nt take long to recapture the diesel option at the rate. I also needed the pulling power.

I had a 2000 f-250 V-8 I just traded in. I ussually got about 7 or 8 miles to the gallon towing and about 10 normally. I traded mine in for a new Ram with the diesel Cummins and now im getting 18mpg stop and go and 12 or 13 towing.

My 250 is getting 17.8 on a good day towing which is alittle better, but my routes last year totaled 18,789.0 miles last year. I've never checked it on a road trip. But if you go 6000.0 miles I could probably live with that, as long as i was'nt pulling much, I do think you will get better though.

I get 13mpg with my 2001 F-250 5.4 V-8. Towing a trailer is a different story.
7mpg is way too low. Better get it checked out.

I have a GMC 2500HD with a 6.0 and a 4:10 rear, and I get 15mpg empty and 12 loaded with a 16' trailer. I have 23,000 miles. My buddy is a top ford mechanic at a local dealer, he says you got something wrong.

Think I'll stick with my 2000 Cummins getting 12.5 pulling 24' eclosed and 20.8 on trips empty.
That's one truck that would be going back real quick......especially with gas prices as high as they are.

7 is way too low. I would give it a couple thousand miles and see if it improves. But I gotta believe something is not quite right with it. You should have no problem getting 13mpg or better empty. 7 would be really low even towing 7,000lbs or so.

Again, thanks guys.... Keep'em coming. I'm taking a better check, without letting it idle for a long time, and topped off the tank.........

that is why i bought a deisel instead of a gas engine. Even pulling my 24' deckover with a full size backhoe on it i still get around 13-16 mpg. I have less than 6k on it also. I know that my frined gets about 12 in his ford V8. it should inprove but that sounds like a V10 instead of V8

GET USE TO IT. IT GETS NO BETTER THAN 10 TO 11 MILES/GALLON.
THATS UNLOADED, PULLING TRAILER LOADED ONE ZTR,W/B AND MISC ABOUT 7. I HAVE A 99 AND A 2000 5.4. THEY SAY THE NEWER ONE HAVE A LITTLE MORE PEP, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF MILEAGE IS ANY BETTER.

I have a brand new F350 Dully 4+4 with the V10. I haven’t seen 10 miles to the gallon yet. I can go about 280 miles on a tank of gas empty. That’s about 32 gallons. When im towing the trailer, it gets about ……oh I forgot. But it’s not nice.

I have a 2002 F250 crew cab with the 5.4 liter V-8, and I consistantly get 13+mpg without towing, and better than 12 mpg with the trailer. On a trip I get 17 mpg. Something is not right. Not trying to be smart, but are you sure you are calculating it right? The vehicle may have a big tank, but the way the fuel gauge sensor is positioned (and the shape of the tank) tells you you are empty after using 23 gallons, leaving 7+ in the tank. I didn't believe it until I was down at the Kentucky Truck Plant (F-250/F-350/Excursion plant) and saw it with my own eyes.

Yes I know how to calculate:p. However, thanks for the info. It now gives me "some" hope that I may be able to get better than the poor mileage I'm getting. I may ask Ford. I just can't see that a motor with only 260 Horsepower should get such poor mileage. My brothers old Z28 (early 68') with 350/more? horsepower got 11 around town.
Pete
Have you had the dealer look at it yet? Considering how new it is and how bad the mileage is, they should put on the computer for free. It may be something stupid like a clogged sensor.
Do you remember what the mileage on the window sticker was? I know those mileage numbers are a pipe dream, but if your mileage is something like less than half, then you have a legitimate reason to expect the dealership to go over the truck for free.
A couple of "stupid checks":
Does the truck have manual hubs to lock the front wheels into 4wd? Are you driving around with them locked? Are they actually unlocking when you twist the hub to unlock them?
If they are "automatic" hubs, are they actually unlocking when they are supposed to?
Does the truck have the correct tires? The dealership (or you) may have changed the tire size (different rims, option package, whatever) without taking into consideration changes in mileage.
Check the owner's manual for the recommended gas octane. This may make a difference, but probably not enough for that bad mileage.
Good luck!

My brother's new 2002 duelly's auto hubs were not disengaging even though they said they were. Put a slight drag on his P/Ser

Well, I already found the A/C switch is screwed up and the A/C is on all the time unless I run the "left of off position" only. If I run to the right of "off" the A/C is on all the time.

My Mustang has about 275 horsepower (maybe a little more) and it gets about 20-21 in mixed driving. But then again, it's not like pushing a brick through the wind :p I would expect 12-13 out of it anyway, and 9-10 towing. Give it some break-in time. Heck, take it on small trips.
Tvov, you asked what the window sticker said for fuel mileage. They don't post that on Superduties. Vehicles over a certain gross vehicle weight do not need to have that info. I think the number is 8500lbs, but I could be wrong. If that is the number the F250 makes it by about 300 lbs.
One more thing to add, I'm not sure if New Jersey runs reformulated fuels all year or not, but that could certainly have an impact on fuel economy. Something to think about.

Pete,
This is normal in todays vehicles.
My kid Sister has a Ford Escort. I believe ONLY the one VENT position is the only position you can have it in where the A/C compressor doesn't run. And in that little car, the compressor groans and shakes the car pretty bad. Not to mention the hp it robs!
Heck my big block Chevy gets better than 7mph.....It gets 7.5mpg!! :D But mine is another 2 liters bigger in displacement and has over 120K of hard milage on it.
You have a problem.
Did you ever check your intake? Have heard of some trucks sucking sound deadening material into the airfilter and clogging it.
Good Luck, and keep us posted.

That sounds about what I'm finding. The single vent center ones seem to be the only time the A/C ain't going........

If you have a on board computer do not take its word. They are very notorious for being wrong.
As to the mileage the worst I ever saw with my PSD was 6. That was pulling about 28,000 lbs gross loaded with hay and pulling against a hard wind.
After I added a power chip I was doing 8 to 9 pulling 24K to 32K and running at speeds up to 75 mph on interstate. Empty I get 14 to 18 with it depends on how hard I drive it to prove a point to the Dodge and Chebie guys I run across. :D :D

I'm leaning toward a new chip... the Dealer said it would void my warrantee......Any input would help..... thanks guys'........

The federal "Magnuson Moss" act states that in order to void a warranty the warranty holder has to prove the addition of the performance product was directly involved in what ever failure. The dealer cannot blanket void your warranty for a power chip.
The reason being I guess is that dealers were voiding some thing like a trans warranty for the addition of after market mirrors. Besides power chips are easy to take off of the diesels. Dunno at all about the gasser power chips.

I also think ill still with my 4x4 Powerstrokes at 20mpg empty. Our Cummings 4x4 with a full Banks kit got 21mpg empty. I guess that the fuel we save and ALOT more towing power is worth the extra $$$$$$$

Thanks for all the info guys. For your info, I've got almost 700 miles (don't laugh) on my truck and it looks like I'm getting about 8 mph combined while towing, around town and a bit of highway. I'm much happier now:p
I'm towing with trailer about 2.5 tons and the F 250 with V8 pulls it great.

I get about 9-10 mpg empty with my F350 with the 5.4 V8. Wish it had the V10, I know a couple of people that get better mileage with the V10, must be that the V8 is just underpowered for the truck and has to work harder. Don't know about the F250, with less weight the V8 might not be underpowered.
