Just wondering:rolleyes:

What is the average height of cut for you guys cutting cool season grasses? I am aware of the 1/3 rule, just curious.

I cut the turf at 3.5 now and will move up a little when it starts to get hotter and dryer during the summer.

Bluegrass and some fescue here.

I cut at 2.5" the first couple and last couple cuts of the season the rest of the time is 3" maybe 3.5 in the hot hot of the summer or if it gets too tall from rain delays.

still have customers asking me to cut shorter. I never go below 2.5"

2.5 for the first couple of cuts the 2.5 for the last couple of cuts. As high as I can get away with every other cut.

Fescue looks better and is healthier IMHO cut really high. Never below 3.5 unless the customer demands it and then I'll not go lower than 3". I try to cut all summer at 4"-5".

I agree with you about fescue looking better cut high but I don't think I could get away with cutting someones lawn at 5". What mower do you use when you cut at 5" (just curious)? I have never tried to cut a lawn that tall, 4" is as tall as I cut.

When I cut at 5" it's commercial properties with big fields of fescue. That's only in the hottest driest months of summer. Most residential lawns I cut @ 3.5-4"

I use the Toro Z-master for 5" on commercial props, the Walker, Toro W/B and Toro push mowers for anything less on residential props.

Most of my mowing is between 3.5" and 4".

You have to educate your customers to the benifits. I still have one customer who has a total fit unless I mow his lawn at 2.5" he simmply does not care what I say he wants his lawn short. All the others I've converted.

Most of my yards I cut at 2 and half. Some customers want it closer to 2 inches or shorter. I’m not sure if it’s a Newport RI thing or what? Unless the grass up here has that rug, look, they want it shorter. Anything 3 inches or more looks unkempt to a lot of people around here. In my opinion, in order for it to look nice at a hire cut it’s just a waiting game till it all fills in. A 4-inch yard looks great when it’s all filled in and looking like a rug.
A lot of my new customers want immediate gratification. So I lower the deck and burn it to the ground. It’s hard to explain to some people that higher cut grass is going to be healthier. Also leaving the clippings down is healthier, as long as there’s not too many. A lot of my customers wont here it. They want it short, and the clippings picked up. A lot of people up here have money, and they’re trying to out do the Jones (if you know what I mean)? Most of the time I can make the clippings disappear with my backpack blower. Just walk along and swing the blower back and forth. This only works if I wasn’t facing a train wreck of grass clippings.

Ok you’re the boss. We can do that. (My attitude) Oh and I actually love what I do. I’m just venting.

2.75 on most, 3.0 on some. I cut one at 2.25 and it looks awesome after I get done.

I vary the number of days between cuttings.
It's around every 5th day in the spring, every week after July 4th.
Or whatever it takes to be able to take off about an inch of growth.
The lawns gets thicker and healthier every year.

A guy here kept his own lawn at 4". It looked really good but he had to mow it every day!

Measured on a hard, level surface, 3". Some customers think we cut too high, some too low. We rarely will change our cutting height for specific customers. This started with using fixed-deck walkbehinds, where changing the cutting height is time-consuming.
Now, it is just easier having the lawns the same height, so we are not worrying about changing the height all the time.
We have found this height to be good all season.
