View Full Version : Idea to save wrists on w/b's and sulkies

If you have a castering sulky or one with a long tongue (pivots near the foot platform) then this would work to help lift the front end of the mower up without damaging your wrists. Have a peice of angle/bar/tube steel bolted to the back frame of the mower right over top of the sulky tongue and have it cut off where the sulky pivots so it doesn't interfere with sulky operation. Now you just take one foot and push down on that lever to help lift the mower :) I'm gonna try that, save on your wrists  Let you know how it works later but I won't get to it till next week.

Can't do that...................... if you go up a steep incline the mower will pivot and the bar will jam against the velky. Also, why do you need to raise the front of the mower????

Ok then we'll put it on a hinge with a stop so it can swing up but not down.... then the sulky will raise it up when needed. Gotta raise mower to trailer, go over very rough spots, jump curbs, etc...

If for some reason you don't have it up, you could mess your leg up.
Bad idea!!!!!!
BTW only time deck gets raised is you go up a curb, but I try to go back-wards up them if I can first.
Also you don't have much wb time in yet, your hydro, you can pop the levers and apply minimal down pressure and the front will "just fly up" with no problem, so I don't get where you are having wrist problems or you just are not plain used to the mower yet, and you are over man(kid)handeling it. Trust the mower Eric:D

What do you mean "have it up"?
My hydros are alittle sluggish?? yes it will pop wheelies but you have to use your fingers to move the levers down, not a problem though, but you still can't do wheelies downhill, sometimes not sideways on hills, and often not as easy with the sulky. I am not having wrist problems but one guy on here emailed me and told me he was finding he was having problems because he was lifting the mower alot. I don't see why this would be a bad idea

Hey I was just warned by a longtime w/b and sulky user that he wore his wrists out constantly lifting it (which happens a good bit). I don't want that to happen to me. I'm gonna try this lever and see. Can't hurt anything!

Eric
Listen to what Mike and Pete are saying. What they both say is true. Trust the mower and just get used to it.

You're just missing the point. As LGF said, you "Back over curbs". Going over them frontward can be dangerous, besides unnecessary and unproductive. Just because everyone else does, doesn’t make it right. Also, if you have to lift the front over stuff while mowing (as a steady diet), you’re either mowing the wrong lawns, or should stop and fix/correct the problem. Again, either way it’s unnecessary, unproductive, plus a professional would solve the problem correctly.

And back over them at a 45 degree angle.
If they are too steep, then cut a 5 foot long piece of 4x4 womanized post to carry round with you. Lay it next to the curb...it acts a "step" up...and then back your mower up and over it.

I have "1" that would need to be driven up, but we elect to drive the mower to the other side of the property to go up the ramp that is there.
The 4x4 peice of wood is also another great idea.
The thing to stick off the back of the mower is a "BAD" idea!!!!
What happens if you can't get out of it's way or get pined by it? Hurt your self real bad.
This would be like trying to walk behind your mower, with the sulky attacthed, what happens if you don't get out of it's way??????

cable and small winch would work to but where you going to mount something like that.sounds like you have a good idea.hey if it works really good then you can get out of landscaping and start selling them.i like seeing someone that likes to make things.i come up with all kinds of things.for my biz and just things to use around the house.like one time i needed a hand truck so after seeing what was out there and the prices i just went out and made my own.i'll post a pic on here if you want.just to show that you can make anything as long as your willing.

No wrist problems here, But Eric if you insist I think youll be sorry, I think what you are thinking will be an ankle breaker for sure. Think about murpheys law "anything that can go wrong will"
As an idea, if you arn't hoss enough to man handel it when you must. You might think about putting your "lever" on a cable as mentioned above BUT use a bungee to keep it up and out of your way when not in use. Kinda like a proslide.

I have used scag walkbehinds and have quite a few hours behind a hydro 52. The front ends of scag walkbehinds are pretty dam light and easy to live up. If you think its tough to handle the weight of your scag try a gravely walkbehind!

Maybe you could just tap into the hydro pump, use valves and a hydraulic cylinder with a slide on the bottom to raise and lower your mower:dizzy: :dizzy: Kind of funny how when you are younger you keep looking for ways to make things easier that actually make it tougher and as you age you finally start to listen to others and make your life a little easier.
