Two 6.5 hp Tecumsehs that run for 1-2 seconds and only after priming.

Hello, I have two Tecumsehs, one on a Sears and the other on a Toro and they seem to have the same problem. After I prime the mower it will start and run for about 1-2 seconds, then it will not start again until I prime it and it will again only run for 1-2 seconds. One is less than a year old and the other is about 4 years old.

I appreciate any help you could offer,

The main jet in the carb is clogged. I would disasseble the carb bowl, clean it....clear all passages thoroughly and replace the needle and seat. Shake the float, make sure it doesnt leak and let her rip!

While your in the carb, make sure the diaphram is in good tact. If I were you, I would go ahead and replace it while you are in there. It sounds to me like the diaphram is sticking. Also check the fuel filter and flush out the gas tank. Good luck, those things can be so aggrivating. Seems to me that the more you abuse them, the better they run and the more you take care of them, the worse they run.

Tecumseh carbs do not have a diaphram. They use a needle and seat and a float bowl similar to a motorcycle or car. Briggs uses the diaphram.

Thanks. I've really ever worked on Briggs. Most of the time when a Tecumseh won't run, I don't fool with it. I just figured the two were the same. Thanks again.

Um, before you jump to the most complicated solution, when is the last time you replaced your in line fuel filter. I'm a big fan of saving money by purchasing used equipment from clueless LCOs. I've purchased 3 used 21 Toros (<$200.00/per) with the same problem. The primer bulb creates enough suction to pull fuel through a filter that is clogged enough to not let fuel pass by via gravity. A trip to Autozone, a few bucks and these mowers have been in service for over a year now without any additional repairs.

Before replacing anything, just remove the nut on the bottom
of the carb that holds the bowl on, it is likely real nasty looking.
Clean it, and clean out the small holes in it, even the tiny one
at the base of the threads, use a small strand of wire. Reinstall
and see what happens.
Leave the float/needle and seat alone if the carb isn't flooding.

While you have the nut out, there should be a steady dribble
of fuel coming out. If not, or you see a lot of dirt and water,
drop the bowl down and look into it.
