I believe there is a formula that can help estimate how many yards of soil are in a pile? I have a potential job of removing a large pile of excavated soil from a site, but want to try to get a rough idea of how many yards it is so I can estimate how many loads the dump truck will need. I was thinking if I have the circumference, height and degree of slope there must be a formula that can be used to determine this? Can anyone help? Thanks.

You need the area of the base of the pile.

multiply that number by the height of the pile at the very top.

divide that number by three so:

Volume=1/3*Base(area)*height---round up to be safe

Man, you never expect to use this stuff after high school;)
