I need to prepare a strip along a fence for sod at one of my customers houses.

There was a garden all along the fence that had all kinds of mixed and matched junk in it (read dead and ugly) there are no large roots or anything to deal with.

I just want to make sure I get all the plants out before the sod goes down.

Should I just till it, or do i need to remove about 4 inches of soil and bring in some fresh material?

Also, what do you guys recomend for putting under a kids jungle gym. sod will just get beaten to death.

For the sod: get rid of any mulch and plant material, bring your soil level up to where you can add sod and be done with it.

For the play set: wood chips are a good, and cheap alternative. You can also you mulch, or if you really want to get into it, there is a rubber mulch which I believe meets some kind of code.
