I saw a few adds a couple of years back in pro mag.The mower was called a Hillbilly. They looked like nice mowers.Does anyone have any info on this machine????I liked it becouse most hill mowers would not have much use other than just hills. This machine looks like it could cut commercial jobs and you can also mount a snowblower on it in the winter!Hey turfequip.com you have in info on this mower?????
----------
from:Adam
AB Lawn Care

That name rings a bell as one of those obscure brands that never gained any market share to speak of.
Your safest bet on hillsides (IMHO) is a walk behind you feel comfortable with and have mastered it's operation. I almost hesitate to say that due to the obvious number of newbie types that use this forum ie. "mower goes left when I ask it to go right"

If it's too steep for a walk behind use a weed eater. If the job's too big for that consider squirting the hill with a PGR or a non-systemic burn down agent (if you have your lisence) or not taking the job at all.
On a side note...just thinking about spraying stuff. I was looking at this demo 65 gallon hydroseeder sitting in my barn yesterday. THIS IS NOT A SALES PITCH Anyway you may know this thing doubles as a water cannon. Seriously! It will shoot like a 1/2" pinstream nearly 70 feet before the stream starts breaking up. What about mixing up a tankful of roundup with the thing.
Wouldn't that be an AWESOME weapon?

Edited by: turfquip dot com

Hillbilly Mowers, out of Kentucky right? Never heard of them. I have used 2 great mowers for hillsides and maybe some others will agree.. One was Steiner and the other was Hustler. Coincidence or not hustler has a banner ad on this page now. Sign from above? LOL
Hope that helps!
----------
<a href="http://communities.msn.com/guidosequipmentpics/">"Guido"</a>
David M. Famiglietti

best unit on a hillside hands down is a hustler hillsider 6400.
designed for military use, mowing ammo bunkers. now used by almost all highway maintenance operations.
units are self leveling (cab and engine), safest unit to use, it has 6 wheel drive, and you can use it for flat land cutting also, it is zero turn !!!
enclose the cab with the enclosure kit, mount a snow blower to it in winter and you have a year round unit.

That machine sounds awesome, and I'm betting that it is indeed, the best machine for the job.
Just wondering what the cost is on one of these...fully equipped of course.
Twenty, thirty thousand dollars or more seems out of context for the guys that frequent LS.

guido, have you used them in the air force ??
that is what they were made for at first.
they have come a long way since then, but still the best unit !
cost.....they are not cheap, msrp- $37,390.00
but dont let that scare you, they more than pay for themselves in contract mowing of highways and brige work.
chances are you can find a factory demo at a little better price.
you never know till you ask.....

Ever heard of a Power-trac. I have seen one of these and they are built like a tank. The 1800 series are made to mow a 45 degree slope and are no where near as expensive as the Excel. Somewhere in the 25K range. Look at this website:
http://www.power-trac.com

----------
thats my 2 cents,
mike

the powertrac has no dealers....factory only...
to some that is ok, but myself i would like to have some type of dealer network.
also, the engine and the cab does not tilt on the powertrac unit( i dont believe correct me if i am wrong), so after a little time you are going to have oil problems (lack of) to parts of your engine.
excel/hustler has made mowers for 35 years, powertrac has not been at it very long, powertrac is known for there mining equipment though, so if any of you do any mining work i would look at em......lol

Edited by: mowerconsultant
mowerconsultant:
How does your unit hold up to the Deweze ATM72? (27 h.p. diesel, 11mph forward speed)
I remember over the winter we found a buyer for a low hour Deweze demo - the list was over $27,000. That unit went for $14,995 I believe.

mowerconsultant

deweze unit is only 2 wheel drive. ( i believe, i could be wrong) the hustler drives from all six when in the hillside mode
take the mowing decks off the deweze and you have a huge motorcycle....lol
deweze unit is only 27hp, and a air cooled diesel, that is asking for problems in heavy mowing conditions.
no comparison in traction or quality to the hustler.
6400 beats it hands down, and this has been proven many times.
and you are not going to mow grass or brush on a hillside at 11mph. it is a good transport speed though.
i cant spell worth a crap tonight, sorry guys....
<font size="1">Edited by: mowerconsultant

<font size="1">Edited by: mowerconsultant

<font size="1">Edited by: mowerconsultant

Edited by: mowerconsultant

Adam, there was a Hustler 6 whhel drive hill sider at Gardner's auction in London last week. It has 780 hrs on it, had a 6 foot deck and a snow blower for it. It looked to be in decent shape. It went for $5000 there was only one bid and the guy's smile was a mile wide when the auctioneer said "sold" Iended up bringing a Honda motorcycle, a rototiller and a Sand pro three wheeler home with me. I went there to see a ransomes but it didn't get released from the bank in time for the sale. Keep an eye on the London paper they have some more reposessed lawn equipment coming up soon. There was also a new (1 hour used) 18 hp straw blower that sold for $650, I quit at $600 I didn't have a buyer for it and already had a load so I passed it by. Now I'm wishing I had of bought it, I found out that they can be used to bed down cow barn free stalls and my neighbour is looking for one. $'s gone by, Oh well next time i guess.

the company was owned buy a 80 year old man he wanted to build a mower for hills. we bought one at Camp Atterbury to mow bunkers. the best mower we ever used it will mow just about any hill. and flat ground. however he closed down the business after three years. we have had this mower about ten years now and we need a good replacement. wish someone could make something like it. he was based out of Indiana.
