View Full Version : Researching start-up in Washington

Just trying to get as much education as I can before starting out.
I only want to be part time to start (less than ten). I will only be working nine days a month at my current job, but my concern is that here in Washington I may get rained out so often that I can't live up to my client obligations.
You guys are a wealth of info. for anyone even thinking of starting out. Any advise would be great.

Let me guess, you're a firefighter, right? I am too. I don't do lawns but I know a couple of guys who do. Here in Western Wa. it seems like most LCOs mow rain or shine. Getting good quality commercial mowing equipment that can handle wet grass is the seems to be the key.

Hi neighbor... I'm in the Smokey Point area.
I ditto hosejockey2002 on getting heavier equipment; e.g. a large (deep) deck with sharp blades.
In this area it is wet a lot, and even with 10 accounts you can find yourself waaay behind if you can't mow when it's wet.
Another thing to think about would be investing in some comfortable GoreTex boots for those wet days. Nothing like having soaking wet feet in the first 30 minutes of the day... with 13 hours left to go.
Best wishes to you!

Thank you both for the advise.
I guess I just always assumed it was dangerous to mow when it was wet. I have read the horror stories here of making turns on wet lawns and leaving large bare spots. I'll have to chat with my local dealer.
Smokey Point that's great, I'm a firefighter in Silvana and soon Seattle. I was starting to think no one from western Washington had found Lawnsite.com yet.

Silvana - Wow, you really are right next door! There are several guys on here from the Puget Sound area.
As for leaving large bare spots on a wet lawn, what are you mowing with, out of curiosity? I have not yet had that problem, but am somewhat careful when it is wet anyway.
All the best to you.
