Hello,
I have a Hustler Fastrak 20/52 that I recently bought. Do I have to buy the oil filters from the dealer? My local dealer is not local, and they are not Hustler savy. Is there a cross reference for a FRAM filter, or other well know brand, so I can buy local...
Thanks in advance.

It is a Honda filter, look and see if there are any #'s on the filter and take them to a auto store, they should have no problem crossing it over for you.
Any Honda engine dealer should also have that filter in stock.
Hope this helps

Among other Hondas, the 15400-P0H-305 is the replacement filter for the 1988-newer Honda Civic, and 1986-newer Accord. If you look up the filter for these models, that's your filter. For Fram, it's the PH3593A

I own a Hustler Short-Cut and the dealer is 90 minutes away. For the Hydro Drive System Hustler wants me to change the filter and add a rust inhibiter to the system when I change the oil. Is there an alternative filter and anti-rust inhibitor I can buy on a local level.

wkasak, im not sure i understand why you think its bad to have the same filter on your fastrak as used on a larger honda auto?
I am glad they used a large, and easily obtainable filter on this machine. Did you want them to use some inferior and small oil filter?
By the way, Honda products are made 1000 times better than any chevy product! I laugh at my fater and brother whom own a 99 suburban and 98 tahoe.....they break down and fall apart with every 10k miles put on them......
Sorry to diss chevy....but really.....how can you compare any american made vehicle with a japanese one?
So be happy that the engine on your Fastrak is of high quality and uses only the best possibly designed parts!

I just think it's funny they use the same oil filters on Honda automobiles that is on my 20hp Honda Hustler motor...love the Hustler/Honda motor.
I don't want to start any brand wars here...I'm just a Chevy truck and car guy at heart...Current fleet includes a '89 Full size Blazer and '98 Corvette.
BTW....my Honda CBR900RR engine runs just fine also...and I grew up a Honda offroad kid...XR's, CR's, 3/4 wheelers...
Back on subject...I picked up the cross referenced FRAM oil filters at Wally Mart...Thanks for the help...

wakasak. i guess i may have missunderstood your comment on the honda car oil filter deal...
No worries, I admit, its nice to have a big V-8 to haul things like boats and other heavy stuff, just comes at a cost sometimes.
Now on subject, I was wondering if a fram oil filter is as good as
a high grade filter. Not sure what the insides of the stock honda oil filter are. I have taken apart a few oil filters after use. I did see a big difference in some. I didnt think the fram filiment was
as good as some others.
Anyone have any comparisons as to just how good various filters
for the Honda 20hp engine are? I got a decent deal on a few honda OEM replacement filters for now, just wondering about the future.
Thanks for any help.

I used to work in the parts department of a Honda dealer, so that part number is permanently burned in my head. Most every car that came in got that part, so we got familiar with it. Anyway, this is the more complete list of Hondas that use this filter:
Honda:
Civic 1988-98
Accord 1984-98
Prelude 1983-98
Odyssey1995-98
Acura:
Integra 1988-98
Vigor 1992-94
CL 1997-98
RL 1996-97
TL 1996-98
How's that for parts commonality? :)
The list was current in 1998. I know for a fact that the Integra didn't change engines until the RSX replaced it in 2002, so that's the same until 2001. Too bad your mowers don't use the same filter as the Acura NSX...
Back to the question above, we had weighed a used Fram filter against a new (unoiled) Honda filter. The Honda weighed more, this despite the lack of oil wetting out the media contained inside the Fram. The Fram was drained, but it had oil-soaked media. The other major difference, and the big one for cars that see some serious oil pressure, is the seal. The seal is retained positively to the filter, and locks itself tightly when installed. The Fram's seal is removable. May not be the biggest difference on this type of lubrication system, but if you're not replacing the filters very often, then I'd stick with the Honda unit.

I agree with the last post as to the weight of the honda filter vs. fram. The OEM filter is just like those I have used on my motorcycle (Yamaha R1), nice o-ring to seal against the block, and quite a bit of weight compared to cheaper filters found at the auto parts store (yes I have read and seen comparisons of the filter media, etc..). I also found the Fleetguard filter to be very similar to the Honda part. My Hustler dealer also sells high end Case and Kubota equipment, apparently Fleetguard is prevalent on those, so they were happy to recommend it. I had trouble finding the Honda filter at motorcycle and Honda lawn dealers, but I never did try the auto parts store for it, good to know. Is this discussion now going to move into the great oil debate ? If so, I will weigh in now..Mobil 1 in my Hustler, same as the rest of my fleet: 99 R1, 00 HD FXSTS, 01 Silverado 4.8L, 03 Tahoe 5.3L.

Ok...Ok...I'm returning the FRAM filters that I bought due to the overwelming pressure...LOL
I have a Honda Automotive dealer close by, and will pick up some from there...

I have a honda 929 and have heard horror stories about the fram filters blowing the seal. For equipment this expensive, I would drop the few extra bucks and protect your investment with a OEM part.

Just as an update...I did return the Fram for a genuine Honda filter, and will replace it with another Honda filter this year. Honda dealers are everywhere!

I found part 15400-P0H-305 at a local Honda dealer but it was smaller than the oil filter that is in my Fastrak. The part in my Fastrak is 15400-ZJ1.
I am having problems finding this particular filter. Anyone out there able to find this exact filter (15400-ZJ1)?

FWIW...my F/T is still under warranty so I've opted to use Honda Oil Filters. I purchased filter from Honda motorcycle dealer.
Question for anyone who has bought oil filter at Honda dealership...do oil filters normally come wrapped in plastic? I guess I'm used to buying oil filters in a box for my domestic cars.
Thanks.

Yup, they come in a plastic shrinkwrap. No box. They come into the dealer 24 to a cardboard sheet, shrinkwrapped to it.

Needs three more digits to match the other (P0H) format.
Is this the 16hp?

I have a 2005 FasTrac with the 20hp Honda. The PH3593A DOES NOT FIT this engine!! The OEM filter # is 15400-ZJ1! Does everyone use Honda OEM??

Even if you stick with genuine Honda filters, you're likely to find yourself confused when you make your first change.
This past spring, Honda phased out the #15400-POH-305 filter for power equipment use and superseded it on all parts orders with the #15400-PLM-A01 which is a longer filter but also has a NARROWER diameter. This is likely to be confusing Hustler owners for some time since I have yet to see the narrow filter installed on an engine in a new mower.
This is not the first time Honda has done this. Historically speaking, Honda has carried narrow and wide filters (though of the same length) for a long time and has a past record of switching between the two in certain individual applications (e.g. HT3813 lawn tractor). The two diameter filters are actually interchangeable since the base circles which carry the sealing o-rings for both filters are IDENTICAL! Likely reason for the existence of the original narrow filter (which was the same length as the wider filter) was ease of service since access was pretty tight in some applications (H4518 lawn tractor comes to mind).
Also, don't be put off by Honda's alphabet soup of filter designations -- these change a lot more oftern than I like! The #15400-ZJ1-004 filter, which someone mentioned above, also supersedes to the PLM filter. So does #15400-ZJ4-999AH, #15400-PLC-003 and even the old #15410-MJ0-004 and 405 if anyone still has any of those floating around. And if the filter has "PE" on the end of the part number, don't sweat it -- it just means it's been packaged for power equipment dealers who can purchase them from Honda "by the each" -- dealers who order the part number minus "PE" get a tray of 30 (and no price break!)

I have brought this up many times b4. I currently have a 17hp Kaw & 23hp Kaw. I went to WIX filter site and theres a place where you can enter your filter number in and it will tell you what other brands also use that filter and it generally gets down to many car engines using the same filter size.
So I currently buy a car filter,, which if you match it up with the OEM filter,, ITS EXACT, Same measurements etc....
AND A LOT CHEAPER,, you can get a quality care filter for $4 - $6 rather than spending $15 at a dealer that is the OEM

you need to find another dealer. I've always heard that the mob runs NJ, but this is the first time I've run into someone offering proof.
List price on Kawasaki's #49065-2078 filter is $7.74. List price on Kohler's #52 050 02-S1 is $7.75. List price on Honda's #15400-PLM-A01PE is $7.80. If anyone is losing sleep over using an aftermarket filter, that's not too much to pay.
Tell your dealer here on out that you're paying MSRP -- he's making money! Tell him he save his inflated prices for the chumps.

I use a Wix 51334 filter for my Fastrak 18/44 (Honda). It is the cross-Reference for the Honda number. It fits perfectly and Wix filters are among the best you can buy, IMO. I will say that I would probably run a Honda filter but the only place I can get them is 50 miles away--one way! Anyway, I am a happy camper with my Fastrak. JB

Hey Guy's I posted something about this last season....I'm using a wix filter on my 20hp honda. Wix is a very good filter that the pro's use so I'm not worried at all that it's not a genuine Honda part. ( got it from O'reilly's) part # 51334

It is outlined in your owners manual on page 4-9.
I responded to your other post about not being able to get drain plug out.
