gear box on straught shaft trimmers, how tough are they??

I just got to wondering, how tough are these gear boxes?? Have you ever had any fail?? Only one i seen fail was on a homelite so it don't count.. So are they pretty tough, or a common failure??

i have a echo trimmer thats 15 years old and its still running.change the plug every season but thats all i replaced.its been used everyday for the past 10 years
