We pay about $26 a yard for shredded cedar mulch. It takes 2 guys about 1hr to do 3 yards. That brings us to $46 a yard installed. How does this sound to you guys?

$26 - mulch (your cost)
$20 - ($10 an hour for two men)

Uhm, where is the profit $$$ in this equasion?

Is the mulch already on site or did you have to take your time and use your vehicle to go pick it up?

Also, did you ever hear of marking up a product for resale?

For me, a yard of $26 mulch just became $45 yard to the customer, installation is extra at $90 hour for 2 men.
For a job as small as 3 yards, I would just flat rate it at $75 per yard delivered and installed or $225.

I charge $75.00 a yard for the first three yards and then $60.00 a yard thereafter, that includes the price of the product and labor.

Before I say this, I am not trying to knock any of you guys - I personally think most of you are getting what you need per yard to make it as profitable as other tasks you guys do.

With that said, are these prices the norm for large landscaping companies in your area? For instance, do you know what you would charge per yard for say a office building or apartment complex that took 100~200 yards? Our prices aroung here lie between $40~$45 per yard (depends mainly on material cost), which some of you guys mentioned you charge. There is no way I could sell playground chips for $77 per yard - I couldn't even sell that here for half that amount. But, I do applaud anyone who can.

guys i would like to ask u a question i hope it dont sound to crazy haw far will a yd/cu yd of mulch spread 3inch thick go thanks

D Felix

Dirt-
It's easy to figure it out. A cubic yard has 27 cubic feet (3'x3'x3'=27). So at a foot thick, you can cover 27 square feet. Since 12" is a foot, and you are asking about 3" thick, you are looking for a 1/4 foot (12/3=4).

Now, you do the math, and tell US how far a cubic yard will go...

It's so simple, I can't believe people actually have to ASK!!??!!?!?!?

Dirtracing and others.... a good general rule to remember:

1 cu/yd will cover approx. 100 sq/ft installed @ 3".

So if your walking an area and you can visualize a 10' x 10' area, you have a yard there. This works well for us. I'm usually within a yard or 2 on estimates up to 70 yds.

you can find a good, cheap triple shredded mulch around here for $8 - $12, people will install it for $30-$35 on mostly commercial jobs, residential we try to get $65 a yard installed...

I am buying a yard of mulch for $26. I have a 3 person crew. I spread mulch $35 a yard last year... big mistake...I think I should spread it 45 per yard...then the profit would be $19 per yard. My crew and i are all in high school. I want the people in our town to want to come to us because we charge less...and i charging to much or to less per yard?...How much can i get away with selling it?

I've had 2 guys move 16 yards in 2.5 hours. On average, though, one man can install and level 2.5 yards/hr.
