View Full Version : Best Grub control fertilizer for the money?
I am a homeowner that has about 40,000 sq. ft of lawn. While putting in flowers in the ground, I noticed lots and lots of grubs. Last year, my lawn did have a few brown spots - probably from grubs. This year already, I have some spots that are getting brown. I live in Ohio and we've had lots of rain the last 2 months. My question: Whats the best grub control for the money? Scotts Grubex is $19 a bag and only covers 5,000 sq ft. Any generic brands that work well for much less money? Or, is there an insect control fertilizer that also kills grubs?
Spectracide® TriazicideTM Soil & Turf Insect Killer Granules contain a new ingredient - 0.04% Lambda-Cyhalothrin vs dianzanon. Bug B Gon w/Grub control uses 6.3% Carbaryl? Any recommendations? Both of these are around $8/bag per 5000 sq feet...

No point in trying to use a grub control at this point as hey are past the lower instar stage and will need more active ingredient to kill. Better off waiting a couple more months for the new hatch which will be more susceptible to Grub-X or Merit.

Dylox(sp). Need to apply for 2 seasons.
Next year you will also want to apply Mert or Mach II to prevent, but will still have to Dylox(sp).

Any of the 3 I wrote above is 10,000 sq.ft for $26 but hard for you to find.

If you treat with merit right now at the proper rate, you will not have a grub problem, the grubs that you will find now are going to become a beatle very soon, it is the eggs from that beatle that you need to kill.
Where can I find these products? Would something like "Tractor Supply Company" carry these?

Merit, hands down, but pricy. Try Lesco.

Not sure what part of Ohio your in but right now the lawn should not be having any effects from grub activity. With all the rain I'm sure your lawn is suffering from one of the fungal diseases currently attacking many lawns with the added moisture. Right now is an excellent time to apply the Merit or Mach 2 for grub control to last the whole growing season. What grubs you are finding now are last years generation of adults which will pupate soon, approx mid to late June into the Beetle problems you'll encounter. However by applying one of these products, the eggs laid by the beetles will be destroyed when the hatch occurs in early Aug. TSC or Lowes probably carry these products under different retail names seeing that Bayer markets Merit in retail forms as well. Good Luck!

What is Mach II? I went to get some grub control as approx. 50% of my lawn was completely gone last year and remembered reading good things about Merit. I was going to get Grub-Ex, but ended up getting the Bayer brand that has 'Merit' on the front of the bag. Does the Bayer brand have Merit in it as it's active ingrediant?
What is the chemical name for Merit and Mach II?
Thanks,
Dan
Merit chemical name - Imidacloprid
Mach 2 - Halofenozide
Now, if I can only find these in a generic brand...

Never have had a problem with Mach 2 in the last 4 years...switched from Merit. Gives a broader spectrum of insect control as well as a wider window.
recliner5, I did not put anything down. Grass looks fine still. I have about 45,000 sq ft of lawn, so it was too darn expensive to buy the Merit brand (at Lowes, I think its Bayer) or the Scotts Grub-ex. I wish I could just find some generic form to put down that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg...

MYTH: If I have grubs in my flower beds, I must have grub damage coming soon in the lawn. NOT NECESSARILY TRUE!
Several types of grubs cause damage to turf. The worst damage comes from newly hatched larva (in Ohio, usually end of july through september for a damage schedule).
For preventive treatment, either merit or mach II available from
Lesco either straight granular or on a fertilizer. For ease of operation and spreadability use the fertilizer combination. Merit covers about 14,300 sq. ft. per bag and Mach II covers 12,500.
Cost will be about $45 to 55 per bag, depending on what you order. Applications should be made before august and watered in to a 1 inch depth. These products last a long time and will
keep grubs from taking over your lawn IF USED PROPERLY.

Mach II from a local Lesco $42.95 per bag. Also protects against sodworms and grubs. Covers 12.5-15K per bag. I picked up 18 bags today- about 250,000 sqft enough to cover 1/3 of my lawns. Joel
