06-02-2003, 08:15 AM
Just wanted to let all you guys in ny know that the sales tax for the state went up 1/4% effective today June 1st. Bill accordingly.
Apparently NY the wonderful state that it is, failed to send out any notice to business & expect us to somehow know & prepare for this. So I'm warning all you guys charge an extra 1/4% as of today so your not screwed come tax time.
1/4% means places like Erie county are at 8.25% now.
Give gives the county a reason to add another 3/4 percent on eventually.....
Check it out for yourself.

From what i've heard & read it only applies on clothing. Not on services etc...
I just checked the website for NY and it applies to all types of sales and services. so i stand corrected .:(
the site is at
follow the links for businesses and you'll find rate charts for all of NY.
Does this apply to only certain counties. I looked at the site and can't find anything. I am having a problem downloading the forms though. Dealing mostly in Ontario & Monroe. What are the new rates?

NYS raised the state sales tax 1/4% from 4% to 4.25%
A few counties also changed thier tax.
WLLD, Monroe is now 8.25%.
Ontario is 7.25% including Geneva City & Canandaigua (the other reporting code).
This is the first time the state itself raised it's sales tax since 1971 so it's not all that bad.
Check out the above link for more information.

Guys just check the link I posted to the PDF file on the state dept of taxation's own web site.
Dutchess (reporting code 1301) is now (as of June 1st 2003) 8.25% that includes a 1/4% imposed for the benefit of the metropolitan commuter transportation district.
Brother1 looks like you may need to find a new accountant if he doesn't even know what the sales tax is.... ;)
The rate increase got added into the budget pretty late so there was not much warning about the it.... He may have sent the form to you before the budget went through completely.

Hey thanks G - actually that was my mistake. After I looked again I noticed it was 8.25 on the sheet he faxed me. Guess I'll keep him on board - just got to give myself a slap.
