View Full Version : Installing Sod w/Compost

Has anyone tried to use a thin layer (1/2" to 3/4") of compost underneath sod? I have heard that this does really well - less watering, better turf vigor, sod takes hold faster, etc.. Probably depends alot on the quality of compost. I am thinking of trying this around here and seeing how well it works. From my figures, I think it would be cost efficient for the landscaper ($0.60~$0.80 per square yard). I would appreciate anyone's comments on this.

Should work excellently. Of course it would have to be screened to be of an even consistancy.

the compost should be incorporated into the top several inches of soil. This will help the grass roots to transition from one soil type to the other. Otherwise, the grass roots have a tendency to become content with living in the compost layer, rather than going into the soil below. This is especially true on clay soils, but can even occur on loam soils that are highly maintained. HTH.
