on a briggs motor. I think the points or the coil went bad no spark with a new plug. not sure how the fly wheel comes off to get to the points. anyone done this repair

Yes. I have an assortment of pullers and knock off tools to remove small engine flywheels. I can get a flywheel off most Briggs motors w/ a brass hammer and prybar.

EKJ - Use a puller. If the flywheel has been on for any length of time, apply some penetrating oil to the shaft. Alternate between tightening the puller and gently tapping the puller center bolt. Flywheel should come off easily. Before attempting this however, check the flywheel magnet for rust. If it is rusty, gently sand the magnet on the flywheel and also the coil (magneto). Remount coil and set gap. An engine will not produce a spark if there is rust build-up on the coil (magneto) and the flywheel magnet.
