First thing you need to do is make sure the vaccum lines to the trans are still hooked up. I believe that year still was using vaccum to make them shift.

In order for another trans to work, it will need to be from behind a small block. The small blocks are 300 inline 6 cyl,302,351,or 400. The tailshaft could also be a problem depending on which truck it is from. If it is from a 4x4 it may be the same but if it is from a two wheel drive, you will need to be able to bolt the transfer case to it so that will be fun. First try changing the trans filter. If that don't work and you are going to keep the truck very long and work it, then get someone to rebuild it. You will come out better in the long run. Then you will know what you have instead of getting a torn up used one for 500.
Yes, any C-6 transmission will work. Ford specified certain casting processes which allows just about any set-up you can imagine. At worst, all you will have to do is swap the bell housing from your tranny to the replacement. The only potential problem is with the transfer case - if it is a full time. all wheel drive, known as a high boy, you many have to swap tail shafts as well.
