View Full Version : How Many Times Have You Gotten Stuck?
With all the rain I know getting stuck in the mud is happening a lot. So far this year my mowers have been stuck 8 times. 5 with the Gravely and 3 with the Grasshopper.

First time I got the exmark stuck in 3 years was last Friday. I went home and got the New Holland come- a- long to pull her out.

The first time I got my exmark lazar z hp stuck was when it had rain for a week, but thank God I was at home and I ran off in the field next to my house. I pulled myself out with my JD LT133. The second time was last tuesday it was not raining I just got hung up in a ditch the back end of the Exmark got stuck on the one side of the ditch and raised my wheels off the ground. Wheels were just spinning in the air. Luckly I had my 48" W/B belt drive I hook up a tow strap and pull my lazer Z HP right out of that ditch. Needless to say I was a little embarassed, I had onlookers the second time. ;):( ;)
When I owned my 52" Lazer HP I am embarrassed to admit I got it stuck 7 times in one season. My TTHP 48" I have only had it stuck 1 time (knock on wood)

Had the Toro 580-D stuck 5 times this year.
Pulled it out with the Toro 325 4WD or come-a-long.
I'd put new tires on it this year with lots of tread.
Where I used to loose traction with the old bald tires,
the new ones let me wade in too deep into wet areas.
Then I'm really stuck!
Here's pics of the new tires.

3 times so far this year...same property and almost the exact same location...you'd think I'd learn. ...but no...always trying to save a little trimming by putting the machine in a position it should not be in. And of course its right along one of our busiest highways so I get lots of people staring at the stupid landscaper. Yes it sure is embarrassing...glad to hear I'm not the only one.

Lately it seems like every time I mow, call me stupid.
I don’t even get embarrassed any more.
My wife is good to me, she just plays along with it.

One time I was mowing on a hill and slid off and got my 44 toro stuck between my truck and the curb had to call a friend to bring my comalong. Good reason to mow with old trucks haha didn't do much damage to the 76 chevy.

We stop counting weeks ago. I personally got stuck 4 times alone last week with one of our Toro Groundsmasters. One time it was so bad I had to borrow the owners 445 Ford loader to pull me out...and I almost got that stuck as well! Plus, I walked the property before I starting mowing.
This has beewn the worst I have seen it in 9 years of commercial mowing.

I really didn't know with all of this rain we had been getting that not getting stuck was even an option. I have had to pull the mower out many, many, many times.

Do you mash them down with your feet?
That's our policy, If you made them, you have to mash them out.

guess what. when you have to be pulled out you are stuck.
Get stuck at least once a month but i can usually get myself out if i have a 2x6 or someother piece of wood. I have learned that when i start to spin just stop and get the wood now. Its only going to get worse. When you guys get pulled out do you open your dump valves to keep from damaging your hydros. And then can you just tighten the valve and keep on mowing or does something else need to be done. Never had to get pulled out just pushed from behind by a helper.

well since many us do this too often lets offer some helpful hints on getting these thousand pound monsters out of where they are. Luckily most times I was always able to reach it with a tow strap and the truck. Afew other times went down over too steep a hill and when at the bottom the traler hitch on the back gets hung up and the wheels are off the ground just enough to sit there and spin. I have a Jungle Jack in the trailer but never tried to use it since I dont think it has enough leverage. Anyone else try the 2x6 method mentioned above? That might be something worth carrying.I'd be glad to carry whatever to get the thing moving again. Re the hydros, once I get the strap on I tighten the strap and then go back and release the brake on the mower. Don't know about impact to the hydros.

LOL. Got stuck in a paved ditch today.
I slid sideways into it from a steep slope, mower turned perpendicular to street, and my sulky bottomed out and the drive wheels were spinning an inch above the bottom of the gutter. Had to turn the mower off and stop laughing at myself before I could figure out how to get out. Was wedged in pretty good.

Thanks for being THOROUGH on your equipment list. You are the FIRST I've seen to list "plastic garbage can"! :) :) :)
Is it a "RubberMaid" or just some import knock-off?
Got me thinking about changing my equipment list to add: "Elvex sunglasses & little blue foam earplugs" to my list!

re: plastic garbage can
(1) note how my garbahe can is listed before my lawnboy.
(2) tip: only buy quality garbage cans. If you have a crappy one and try to throw it out, they won't take it.

HA! I got you all beat! I got stuck THREE times in ONE day on the SAME YARD! It was a very wet day, stupid yard had to be mowed though, so in we went. Ah man, that was awful. My crews still tease me about it.
One of my crew managers somehow managed to back the trailer down into a ditch, and then somehow got it wedged in there so tight, it took two trucks to pull it out. The ninny.

WOW I GOT STUCK TWICE WITHIN A 15MINUTE TIME FRAME ON OUR LESCO VIPER. CUTTING ALONG A SLANT THE DIRT GAVE OUT AND NEXT THING I KNOW I'M HEADING INTO THE BUSHES OVER THE EDGE OF A DITCH. THEN AFTER I GET THE MOWER UNSTUCK I HEAD TO MAKE A LINE AROUND A POND AND I GOT TO LOW ON THE STEEPEST PART OF THE HILLSIDE AND BOOM I WAS HEADING INTO THE POND. LUCKY ENOUGH I GOT THE MOWER STOPPED BEFORE TAKING IT SWIMMING.

Yup, great idea. After my first time & having to look all over the place for sticks or boards to get un-stuck, I decided to just carry some 2x6 on the trailer. I think someone else on her mentioned it too. The 2x6 along with a shovel is adequate for getting the 48 hydro un-stuck......unfortunately I've found that out!!!!!!!:)

Carry a VERY long tow rope in the truck, and just use the truck to yank it out. And also, sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes all the mower needs is a little extra oomph to get out. That "oomph" can be provided by one of your crew getting behind and pushing. I have found that very often that is all it needs. Just a push, and out she comes.
Also, when we get a ZTR stuck, you can hitch a rope from the front of the ZTR to the backend of another ZTR, or large WB, and that will get it out as well. We do that very often.
Another thing, my uncle taught me this, he was a tank driver in WWII, and he said that when you get something stuck, simply rock it back and forth by shifting from Drive to Reverse in rapid succession, and that will often build up enough force and momentum to get you out. that is how I have gotten my 2X4 truck unstuck several times, and the ZTRs.

"I GOT TO LOW ON THE STEEPEST PART OF THE HILLSIDE AND BOOM I WAS HEADING INTO THE POND. LUCKY ENOUGH I GOT THE MOWER STOPPED BEFORE TAKING IT SWIMMING."
LOL -- same thing almost happened to me yesterday. Flies were biting me and the mower was slanting toward a pond. Thought I was out of business.

even though this is an old post, i wanted to put in my embarassing storries on getting stuck. One time back in '04 i had just finished mowing the lawn and stupidly parked the tractor in back of a swimming pool that i was going to drain. well the pool is built into a hill that slides down steeply into the woods. i had completely forgotten the tractor, as the pool was halfg drained, i heard this noise of moving brush, i looked around the pool and the tractor had slid halfway down the hill, i tried to get it up, but with 20,000 gallons of water, pouring down the hill the tractor just burried in 3 feet of mud. I tried everything including tire chains to get up the hill, and was about to try and get the SUV to pull it out. Got the SUV halfway within reach of the tractor and it started to slide, needless to say i got that out of there ASAP. i ended up taking the tractor down through the woods and back up through an ATV trail, NO DAMAGE AT ALL!!! i was very lucky, and this was not even my house :-). And one other time was last year with my simplicity regent, a client had a pond and the hill leading to it was not steep but i got too close and the banks gave way and the back end of the machine ended up in water covering its rear tires, got it out with a little muscle. well that's it for getting stuck, for now, i hope my new simplicity broadmoor with traction control keeps me from having another embarassing event.

Anlother useful tool for "unsticking" is a bottle jack. Keep it and a short 2X to put under it and another to put under the wheel. I guess you can tell from this that I have "experience" in this field, unfortunately too many time to tell about. Other items you should have with you are the come-along and a long pull strap.
I also would like a definite answer about releasing the hydros before pulling or pushing.

Not been stuck on a job, but have been stuck at my own house (steep, steep ditch) Often just get my wife to drive while I pushed once or twice had to hook the truck up to it.. One time I was stuck but trying to get my way out and felt a push from behind. The guy who mows the school across the street saw my situation and came over and gave me a push. Of course i have helped him several times as well. Good memories!
