I have clay soil and was wondering if I mix in peat moss will this help soften the soil? I have been using a disc cultivator to loosen the top 4" but it still gets hard as a rock within a few days. I want to put seed down but it dries out so fast. Will peat moss help or can you suggest something else.

Peat moss will work, also compost or any other type of organic matter. Gypsum will also help in loosening heavy soil.

Gypsum is good - what about some sand (cheap & helps break it up)

Be careful with sand and clay. By mixing sand (large particle) and clay (small particle), you will end up with a concrete effect, similar to mixing aggregate and cement. Sand, however, can be used if it is used in conjunction with organic matter (peat, compost, etc).
