Picked up an '89 JD STX-38 with a problem. The mounting points for the coil pick-up near the flywheel are broken off. The prevous owner tried to adjust the clearence and didn't torque it down properly. The pick-up contacted the flywheel and broke the mounts. Has anyone welded the cylinder sides and if so how did you do it without warping the cylinder? Does anyone have a spare cylinder that they would like to sell? It's appearence isn't important but it must be functional.
Thanks in advance.

The engine on the STX-38 is a Kohler 12hp and I would be welding the mounts not the cylinder itself. Wanted to mention that to avoid confusion.

Have decided to try welding but just a little at a time. Will fill the cylinder with oil to take some of the heat. Haven't had any replies so will try this approach. It will be hard to weld with fingers crossed.

Do you think something like JB Weld would work in this case. Many a marine cylinder block has been repaired using this. It is not the best solution but much less risky than welding. If it does not work for you, then go the welding route. You have nothing to loose.
