Yet another question that makes the case for a need for an engine mfg board here at LS, but you can probably field this one.

During routine engine maint: (MetroHP 15hpKAW)
After a thorough cleaning, I oil the foam air cleaner element before reinstalling.

Should I be oiling new elements straight out of the package?

Island,

Kawasaki has changed their stance on the maintenance of the twin cylinder engines. DO NOT oil the foam pre-cleaner on these engines.

There is something different about the foam and the paper element that prevents the need for the oil...........We were surprised also.

This may help as well: http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?threadid=38688&highlight=%2Aprecleaner%2A

Thanks

Does the no oiling apply to Kohler motors as well???

KTNC,

This DOES NOT apply to the Kohler engines with paper filter and foam pre-cleaner.

All Kohler pre-cleaners should be cleaned with detergent and water dried and re-oiled at the required service interval. The service interval is around 25 hours according to the manual. In fine print it states "more often in harsh or severe environments". That means daily or twice per day if needed.

Thanks
