It's pretty obvious to me that in order make it in this business I'm going to have to learn how to repair and maintain my equipment. At this point all I know how to do is change the oil and replace filters, spark plugs, etc.
Could some of you ' veterans' tell me how much of the repair work you do yourself? How do I learn how to sharpen and replace blades as well as other repair jobs in order to reduce costs? Thanks. Jim

Just like when you were learning to pull teeth, practice, practice, practice. I do all of my own maintenance except for major repair work, which is very rare with good equipment. Most maintenance I do is done weekly and I do it so often now that it doesn't take very long per mower.

Get schematics for your equipment so you know how its put together. Also part number lists to use when ordering parts. Basic hand tools (sockets, combination wrenches, screwdrivers pliers, etc.) are needed to do things like change belts, replace cables, spindles... Sharpening blades can be done on a bench grinder or angle grinder or by hand with a mill file (I prefer the file over the grinder). Honing a blade to a keen edge is somewhat of an art, but it can be learned by trial and error and with a little patience. The most important things you can do to your equipment is keep the oil changed. Keep the air filter and pre-filter sparkling clean ( I clean mine every 4 hours of running time). Keep the spindles well greased and they'll outlive the motor.
I can do any repair required, including engine rebuilds and welding.
Do I do it all now? No. Guess I have become a little lazy. I truly do want to do it all again but not motivated. And I actualy have A/C in my shop/garage........:D with cable TV and stereo
