Really Bad Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had my new helper start today. At interview she said she had worked on commercial crew. got to my first five lawns and gave her the trimmer. I cut all five lawns,edged,went to check her work and she went around all five lawns with NO string in trimmer! She also spilled a gallon of mixed gas on another lawn! I want to fire her but need the help. Think I might fire her and work alone untill someone calls about ad. I'm sooooo mad right now! Just needed to vent some. :angry:

As a female, I expect to work as hard and be as efficient as any man on any crew. There is no reason for this to have happened with your new employee. The gas...Ok, maybe SOME of it could spill...

But, the weedeater...no string...WHAT!!!???!!!

Did you drug test her before you hired her?

How could you trim 5 lawns and not notice you don't have trimmer line?

Cut her loose...she's giving us all a bad name!

Geo, you make some great points in your reply, but no string in the trimmer. You would think after the first time you go to trim and nothing happens..............time to reassess the situation.

Just cuts, why don't you try working with the girl for a couple of weeks. Pay her accordingly, and tell her that she's on a trial basis only. If after 2 weeks she doesn't get the hang of it let her go. One way to look at it is it's a perfect opportunity to train someone to do the job to your specs. No bad habbits to deal with. Also teach her to pour gas in the smaller equip. in the back of the truck. Easy clean-up.

I would suggest that as long as this girl seems like she is clean that you work with her. Do as others have suggested and help her build her skills. For applications which require detail and a creative eye, I would take a woman over a man ANY day of the week. I have had women do grunt work before, and they kept up with the men. However I really felt bad about it afterwards. On the other hand though, they did insist on doing the work...

I also had a bad day. A helper working with me did almost everything wrong all day. Started with a rehab job. Told to cut at a lower height, which he did not listen, so he had to cut twice. Then told to put clippings in back of truck, but put them in dump trailer instead, now he had to clean out dump trailer (needed trailer to haul loam). Told to watch out for irrigation heads when using aerator, which he did until the last head, which he snapped off. Now I had to dig up line and repair. All day long all I heard was sorry.

To top it off at the end of the day, we are putting all the tools and equipment away, I tell him to take the rest of the gas in the gas can and dump it into the truck. I thought he understood to put it into the gas tank, but I was wrong. I come out of the garage and he is pouring the gas out into the body of the truck. Again I hear sorry.

I can not afford to have help make mistakes like that all day. This was on Thursday. Gave him the day off on Friday, and had my wife fill in. It is much nicer to have help that cares about how and the way the job gets done.

Did you check to see if he still had any drugs left at the end of the day. If he's not on drugs, and he's not ******ed you better hold a flashlight up to an ear. If his eyes start glowing real bright then you know the problem.

In your case ffshuter, fire him! You can't train someone who won't listen.

I do have one question. What was going through your head? Why would you turn your back on somebody who can't follow the simplest of direction? End of day clean-ups are much faster if you don't have to clean up after your helper helping you to clean up.

Equipment should never be refueled on the customer's property. Always in the street/at the truck. When I see my help lugging a fuel can onto a property, I immediately stop what I am doing and correct them.

This is just to funny. The helper doesn't need to be fired, the manager/owner does. HE DID NOT DO HIS JOB. Who in their right mind would hand a new person something and then grab a mower and disappear for 5 lawns?

As far as the fuel... I can actually understand the spill....... not trained to refill in the street or on the trailer.... but a GALLON?

I think a couple of hours of training should give you an idea if she's trainable.

Also...... find out what she REALLY did at past jobs.

Drug test? There's stoned, and there's stupid. This person is stupid. So is the guy who poured gas in the bed of the truck. Is it legal to test for stupid before hiring?

I fired her on sat morn. Have a friend helping out until I find someone. From know on everyone will work on my lawn at interview to see if they can work equip! It was my fault for trusting what she said at interview and not seeing for myself.I wish some of the guys I had this weekend would work with me full time,but they all have pretty good jobs. We installed 3 irrigation systems today. Each 6 zones.Really great workers!!!!
