I maintain a subdivision, which has decided that they would like to have a planting around the retention pond, so that the homeowners would have something nice to look at. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecited. The retention pond is naturally full sun.
I just did a design like this. The basin was in a clearing. I planted the wood line with Dogwood, Redbuds....draped boston ivy over the concrete basin walls, and surrounded the perimeter with a native wildflower mix. The swale and floor are cut regularly, and the wildflowers will be cut once a year.

Personally i would go with something simple around it like an offset row of Leyland Cypresses. Evergreen means they still wont see the pond in winter time. If you have to you can add some smaller ornamental trees infront of them.
