I was talking with one of the Big Co. in my area about striping. They were one of the last ones to switch over to making stripes. They would just keep going around the lot, like you use to do as a kid, until they were done. After switching to striping they cut 15 to 20% off there time. Just a thought for thoughs of you who havent converted.

I don't see how they cut time. It takes me extra time to stripe a lawn. I have some i call "field cuts" that i get dizzy on.

It has saved me time in my own lawn but you have to cut within the layout of the landscape. One way this week the other way next week. Not all in one day.

We have a local "professional" who uses Scotts riding tractors that doesn't stripe. Other than that everybody around me does.

I do, and it was becasue it saved time. I go around the property and make a trimming pass, then go back and forth along the longest side of the lawn. If the ground is soft I switch directions to keep out ruts. I have gotten a few yards from neighbors who wnated to keep up with the Joneses. I don't like it at my house, I want the yard to look like carpet. Hardest part about doing it was teaching my son the concept of "perpendicular or parallel" to the house. That was fun. :)

It may not save time on a perfectly square lot, but it does save time on odd shaped lots. I have very few square lots, so it is a big time saver for me.

What do you mean by the term striping?

striping takes me longer...time to plan best direction and also more trimming time I dont do circles around trees and the overlap

Stripes: This is when you go one direction and it is leaving a light stripe and then coming back it leaves a dark stripe. I have pictures on my website of lawns that have been striped and a page on how to do this.

You cannot stripe in GA. We have mostly cetipede yards w/ a few St. Aug. I "stripe" just to make it look neater on some of my nicer lawns, but there is no dark or light colored paths like in Eric's pics.

Leeslawncare, I don't have a DC, I use a 52" Great Dane Chariot and a 48" Great Dane Scamper walk behind. Here are some photos of a few lawns I do showing the stripes they leave, with no striping kit. All lawns are tall fescue cut at 3.5-4.5" with very sharp blades.

In Alabama it would be hard to even find a nice lawn to stripe. Most of the lawns are cen, berm, zoyia, but most are just either weeds or crab grass that,, grass that grows a couple inches a day if we have rain. Unless i get a real nice contract im not going to worry about stripes

Striping takes me much less time b/c i utilize more of the cutting width of the machine i am cutting with. honestly i have not encountered a lawn i can not make a strip in....it may not be noticable to a normal person but to a trianed eye it can be detected. i like to think as striping as an art form seeing what angle strip best complements the geometry of the house and property. the best strips come from grass that is fairly health and just a tit bit moist

if you have a commercial mower that zero turns, such as a rider or walk behind, striping will save you time & look better once you know what you're doing.
If you have a crapsman or other conventional style tractor, roundy round is your destiny.........:)

I agree with landscaper 3,my big commercial account is striped and the district manager for the corperation was there last week about an hr after I left, well he made a comment to the Manager that he had the best looking lawn out of the 30 stores in his Zone,he wanted to know who had done it.To me this lawn isnt that great-a lot of weeds and some bald spots,no irriagation-they dont want it treated because its so close to a storm drain main opening. But since I striped it and bagged the main entrance it looked like a baseball field, almost as good as Eric lawns,He wants me to do his 29 other stores now,to bad they are so far apart-id like one or 2 more.

Thanks EricELM for the info at your site. I have been wondering what exactly a striping kit consisted of. Great site!
