Burning oil in mower

I bought a used 98 Scag turf tiger last mo. Since then I have had to refill the engine oil 2 x. The last time the engine nearly seized and shut down. The shop owner says that the engine on these riders burns oil at the rate of 1 oz. per hr. per cylinder. Damn! Is ths common or B.S?

ITS B.S.-MY TIGER USES NO OIL-IT HAS THE 25HP KOHLER AND I CHANGE OIL EVERY 50 HOURS AND IT DOES NOT USE A DROP IN BETWEEN.
