Hi everyone, it's your friend Ed from turfquip...
I'm playing with Flash 5 again this morning, making Industry Specific motion graphics. What is your opinion of this work please. I'll place a link just below.
Choose from the following superlatives:
sucks
big deal
o.k.
kinda neat
didn't work

Takes so long to load and I'm on a T1 line, but kinda neat anyways.
Wouldn't you want people to just hop right into your site as opposed to them waiting to load?

Scraper,
The graphic is made to look like it's taking a long time - the .swf file the page derives from is only 40K. It's a little deceptive...I have a twisted sense of humor sometimes. Goes to show you too, that just because you read it on the net doesn't mean it's true!
You received that file on the T-1 in probably a tenth of a second.

Ed you need to keep the frills off your pages if you want to attract those third world types using kerosene powered 486's with 14.4 modems.
My fav for web site design is this site:
http://www.drudgereport.com/
Notice how fast it loads?

I'm not too worried about third world types. I think it's more the content that was bothersome with the file I showed you more than the format of the file. Agree?
You're concerned I have the power to slow your asses down a few nanoseconds but I was faking it. You believed it. But did I leave an impression during the process?

The impression was...that if it took any longer to load I was gonna leave.

How long did it take..seriously? If you hit your back button from turfquip does it run instantly or is there a border on a black blank screen?
Do you see a border or the words "ASSEMBLYING WEB PAGE"
This is a crucial question..please let me know.

If I came across that page from a link I wouldnt (and didnt) wait for it to load, parlor trick or not. K.I.S.S.

I see "Assembling Page" no border and something about installing audio. About 10 seconds on T1. I usually wait no more than 5. If I hit back once it directs me to turfquip I go back to the wait.

LawnGuy, O.K. I understand. My question is were you waiting for it or did you think you were waiting for it?

Scraper, this is important. Are the times you mentioned roughly equivalent to the the very first time you clicked the link?

each time...and it may have been longer than I said, but no more than 20 seconds for the first time....

i don't like to wait on any fancy loading, i want to go straight to the page. i looked at it at work on a t1. at home i would be at 56k. if it takes long i back out.

Ed:
If I understand you correctly, the file itself is quite small (40k), so that gets downloaded quickly. However, I think that the intro is too long. If it downloads that quick, why have all this assemblying page and loading sound stuff. Just cut to the chase. It takes 20 seconds after clicking your link to get to the site. Thats too long. The intro is cool, but if its gonna be long, give the option of skipping the intro.

Eric: Correct, you have the file in it's entirety long before you think you have it. It doesn't matter the speed of your connection once the file is loaded...it takes 12 or 13 seconds to complete the movie.
Someone emailed me and asked what difference it makes if he's waiting or thinks he's waiting....and some of you may ask the same. The difference in a word - is HUGE.
This is a sample exercise. In sum, it means nothing. I'm still exploring theory, precepts; gaining insight on web experiences. There is a long way yet to go.

Ed...movie? Just a little animation of text is all I see...for the time it takes to load...nothing special abut it. Also if you like it...correct the word "Assemblying" to "Assembling"
Assemblying should be assembling. I needed the Flash 5 from macromedia but instead of downloading it, the browser took me right to your site, so I didn't see the movie. Is the movie supposed to be the intro to going to your site?

Kinda neat
I have a T1 line and it took a while to load. I would not have waited normaly. It's a good site once I got in. If it was me I would take some of the frills out. People want to see things fast. If they are at work - they don't have the time to bring up a long intro. Just a thought.

Scraper, You're right and I'm embarrassed. I thought I was a better spellr.
.swf files are called movies because I could loop an mp3 tract behind it if I wanted.
My example was extremely simplistic. A lot more can be done. There is no interactivity with the example I gave, but I'm learning to build sites like this.

Ed, flash is cool and all but I've just about gave up on learing it. Usually I get it quick buy not this one, just haven't had time to read the entire book. Keep it simple if you are using this unless you give them options from the flash page. Check out http://www.edlnc.com that site was done by a 16 year old, it simple, fast, and has the company logo on it. Really pisses me off. :)

Kirby,
You're right, Flash is tough to learn, and expensive (400 for software alone)but yet to have high quality, engaging graphics like the site you shared has value and separatesyour web site from the thousands of other boring, two dimensional sites.
I'll be offering design and development services using Flash in the near future. Right now, I would be glad to kick around ideas/concepts with landscaping site owners.
