Does everyone edge sidewalks everytime you mow or every other week? Just wanting to know what some of you guys and ladies do.

Stick edger for first edge in the spring, maybe again in the fall, then maintain each time with the trimmer.

Edge?

Heck...people don't even want to pay what it's worth to get the turf cut.

Every other time with a stick edger. Here of lately they’ve not been needing edged as often, some only once a month. Some of them need it once a week, these are the real nice lawns with soft soil that fill in the edge quickly, but I haven’t done those often lately either (too dry & slow growing to need it). It does give a nice finishing touch to a lawn though.
Personally I use a Echo SRM2400 split boom with the edger attachment. The one time I tried using a trimmer, it looked awful and I threw a rock into a expensive French door window… we can’t even find anyone to replace just the glass, likely both doors will have to be replaced. It was two layered tempered safety glass fortunately and just broke the outside layer on one door. Customer was sitting at table just inside the doors when it happened  From then on I’ve always used the stick edger, it has lower RPM at the blade, does a better job, cuts instead of plows (safer) and has a nice guard made just for edging. Faster and easier for me too.

edging is an additional service that we charge

So what do you charge for edging? Per foot?

So your answer is that you don't charge per foot. So, what do you go by? 10 minutes 10 bucks? What?

HG

If you know what you need to make ends meet (ie: $35/hr or whatever) you simply need to figure how many ft you can edge in a minute x 60 mins and you have your hrly rate for edging.

Stick edger every week. It gives the lawn a "manicured" look and makes your work stand out when compared to the LCO's that don't edge every time.

Greenscape4u.com

actually I never heard of anyone charging just for that service , we include it in our maintenance programs.

Port City Lawncare
09-23-2003, 05:23 PM
I've never thought of it as a per ft cost. It's SOP, simple as that, and should be included in the price, no matter what. I can't believe you don't charge everyone each time. I don't mean to sound harsh, it's SOP here, always has been.

It's almost the same as those who don't edge tree and flower beds. Who doesn't edge all of the beds?

Down south, every visit, as elephantnest said. Mowing specs on southern military installations specify weekly edging. (The edge width and depth are also specified.) On southern lawns, using a weedeater to edge regularly creates a "false edge", in other words, it "looks" edged, but the concrete edge is an inch or more behind the phony. (Then you have to chop it out with a sharpened shovel.)

drives me nuts when all a customer wants is a "cut & trim" job when we know we can give a top notch service for little extra !

tiedeman
09-23-2003, 05:41 PM
people up here don't want to pay the additional charge for edging with their mowing, so we just have it as an add on service to customers. If they want it, they pay extra.

Plus you don't have to edge everytime that you mow up here.

I dont understand why you guys dont include edge in the price. I wont let a crew leave untill all Drive ways, Side walks, curbs, and Flower beds are Edged. I think that look is what seperates Professionals from Scrubs

My 2 cents

I don't include edging in my standard service, it's an extra service that I charge extra for. Many people request the service, many don't. I include it as part of my Package Service, and then I do it monthly with the stick edger and weekly with the weed wacker. Other folks that request edging seperately get it a couple times a year. I've tried to include it as part of my service in new estimates, but people just don't go for it. Personally, I like the way the lawn looks when edged and if it were up to me everyone would get it. But it's not, so it's an extra service that I charge extra for. And when I do, I figure out the charge according to my hourly rate.

I am very jealous of the guys that can get several services out of a visit. Most of my people want a mowing and trimming and that's it. Some will want more, and that's what my package service is for. I've tried in the past to give estimates that include extras, and even tried to require extra work with mowing, but most folks won't go for it in my area. I get many that ask for it on a seperate basis, but I don't think they like being required to sign up for everything just to get their lawns mowed. Especially the older folks that are on a budget and don't really need weekly edging, etc.

I edge all of the property's I service, it's the trim. It doesn't take any longer to walk behind the edger weeklly, than a string trimmer. And it makes all the difference in the finished product.

For commericals anmd residentials, I won't take the job if they want it left untrimmed and unedged. The next person driving by won't know that it was by request and not poor quality work connected to your business.

Stick edger every cut. Makes it stand out against the other lco's. No extra charge.

In my area, there's no question about edging at every mowing, must be done because of growth.
Different parts of the country have different types of edging and/or curbing. My area has both step and roll over curbing, sidewalks, and most driveways are concrete. To not edge any of these down here would mean not getting to go back the second time.

I have been looking for a striping kit that would give me a very defined stripe the problem is that the mower I have is a gravley pm 252 xdz mower and the only thing thats out there for my mower is a rubber flap that just does not do much of anything for me. I can't put any type of roller kit on my mower deck because there is just not enough room. the other day I was on this site and came across this coustom roller kit that you listed and would like to know more about this company turflex because I cant find mention of it anywhere but on this site so if you could please get back with me thanks

the only way to manicure a lawn is to trima nd edge to perfection every time without fail. if you responded to that ? with a once a month or something answer i sure hope you dont consider yourself a pro or at least be one of the newbies!!!!!!!!!!

As needed. Usually bi-weekly.

As for first cuts that are horrid - I tell 'em up front that it'll cost extra this first time.

Also, recently bought an Edge-It and have actually just started edging weekly on some accounts b/c it only adds a minute or so to most jobs.

I'm going to buy an edger for next year... i think it looks so much cleaner than doing it with a trimmer

BanvilleLawnCare

I just include it in the price and charge a little extra. My first season I made it extra and my customers only wanted it like every three weeks. Edging and trimming around beds takes me less than ten minutes, makes me more money, and ultimately means happier customers. So everyone wins!:)

to recover an edge it costs $0.75 to $1.25 per foot. Most large companies top 3 advertised services are 1.Weekly mowing 2.shrub trimming 3.lawn edging.
Why? because it's one of the last professional services left that you can get a fair price for and weekend warriors don't do/know how/know what it is.

I use a guide on my Stihl FS 90. It gives a wider edge but I think it looks better than a stick edger.

Hey lawnboy, hows biz in the boot. I'm orginally from NO and now living in GA but we are having the drought of the century. I'm thinking of coming back some.

Yes! Otherwise you are cutting a new edge and wasting boatloads of time. I can't imagine not edging, not just walks, drive and street but also flowerbeds. How do you keep the turf from invading the beds if your edger is sitting on the trailer?

lawncuttinfoo

most ppl pay a gardner to do the bed edging.

In Florida with St. Augustine turf you need to edge every cut or it will be half way across a sidewalk.
