If someone wanted to buy your business and offered enough money that you would sell, what would you do next?
I'd look into a Dunkin Donuts franchise. BIG money involved when it comes to that morning cup of joe!

Funny i've been asked to buy my business from 2 diffrent lawn services,of course when i see money then the decision will arise,i would however stay in the lawn and landscape field, say as a foreman or comparable position...

I had that happen this past summer, it took two seconds for me to think about it and I'VE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER.
I'm looking for a 48" walk behind that i will put in the back of a pick up and be a super scrub.

I'm interested in knowing how the dollar amount was calculated? Is it price per lawn, total year end rev, what?

Rodfather
Its price per lawn and it is low. Idle hands are the devils work shop!
John
Had someone call me the other day, and ask me if I'd sell them some of my accounts? Not interested.

You should at least look at the money, then decide.
John
Yes,but they didn't want the whole biz.just pick, and choose. Also they seemed a little shady, just a gut feeling though. Tony

If the money was right I would surely sell. I would want enough to retire, otherwise I don't know that it would be worth it.

Nope. I wouldn't sell. This is only our second year and I'm still enjoying it. When I stop enjoying it, then maybe I'd sell. No idea what I'd do instead. Maybe go back to another previous career until I get tired of it again.

If the price was right id sell in a heart beat. After 10 years in this business im bored, frustrated tired of doing the same thing day in and day out. Would have to be a very nice chunk of change though ;)

I wouldn't sell. No question. Some things in life just don't have a price tag on them. I enjoy what I do. To me, everyday is a blessing. Money can't give me that. Its being happy with my situation. I wake up everyday not thinking I'm going to work, I'm doing what I love. My own boss, making things grow, dealing with people and playing with equipment. I'm satisfied with my decision to be in this industry.

If the money were right I would sell.....for cash only not payments. My business already kinda runs itself...so I'm actually getting payments as it is! And a paycheck.
But...I have other interests and would like to try something else...don't know what so don't ask.....but the money would have to be pretty good as I am gleaning pretty good money annually with very llittle input from myself other than sitting in office at pond answering phone...etc.

I'd sell - For a price! payup I'm a private pilot now and would love to get my ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) or commercial helicopter license and work out west on those fires! Even a Medi-vac sounds good!
Oh, I'd probably start up a lawn care again on the side. LOL

I guess there probably is a price for me, but I would hate to because I would probaly have to go back to the accounting field. I may try another business idea. Great question.

Hi Ccwmlw,
I may try another business idea.
Any thoughts on what you would like to try next, if you did?

Rock,
The machining trades all have an over capacity problem.Too many companies, not enough work to keep pricing up.The trade and industry in general has stayed flat for quite some time, until things flush themselves out which will still take years.
As for what else would I do, Woodworking, forestry, deck building......
just a few ideas.
I wouldn't be selling because I don't like it,New challenges are just fun to me.
Dvmcmrhp52 what would you like to do in the forestry industry? Funny that you picked that one, since that is what my dad has done for 30 years(started his own business at 18),also my grandpa was in the timber industry his whole life as well as my great-grandpa. I am the first one in my family in 4 generations not to go into the timber industry. I really loved it,done it my whole life untill i graduated, then decided to get into big time auto racing(Winston Cup)and been doing it ever since. I've been a machinist the whole time and love every minute of it. That's all i've ever wanted to do is be a machinist in Winston Cup racing. I also still have the desire to someday own my own business though, probably still machining related.
dvmcmrhp52
11-17-2003, 03:18 PM
Machining in the racing industry is probably somewhat protected from the average competition....It is a niche market.
as for the forestry industry,Logging would be great fun but it's not that lucrative around here. Again enough people doing it to keep pricing down. Forest managemant was always something I was interested in since I was young....Always wanted to be a forester.
Dvmcmrhp52 logging around here is very lucrative. The timber industry is what keeps this area alive. Most of the big furniture companies in the world are here. We have Stanley furniture,Bassett furniture,American furniture,Vaughn furniture, and a few smaller ones, between all of them they employ several thousand people. We also have one of the largest flooring plants in the U.S. here also. There are several large sawmills around here. My dad still has his sawmill, and still does some logging also, but he buys most of his logs now from other loggers. I love logging myself, just decided to give something else a shot. I quess the biggest thing was i wanted to prove that i could make it on my own without any help from anyone else. I got into racing on my own with no help from anyone, and have let my work speak for itself ever since. My dad had a full paid scholarship to go to college for forestry and didn't do it(started his business instead). He still says to this day not going to college to be a forester is the biggest mistake that he has ever made.
dvmcmrhp52

College probably would have been good for him in the business wether he used it for forestry or just backround to run his business.But........Too soon old and too late smart.....I can relate to it.
North central Pennsylvania is the "cherry capital of the world" So they say. Cherry trees are quite abundant in that area and timbering is the biggest business. Pennsylvania in general is one of the
largest producer of hardwoods in the country. A lot ofhistory in timber in Pa.
