Hey Murfreesboro boys,
Where is the best place to get trees? Not shrubs but trees.

Mowmoney00
05-05-2005, 10:36 PM
Depending on what size and kind of tree your looking for....I always choose The Tree Place on Lascasass Pike or the Mulch Company on the same road. You can get big trees for a good price.

Good to hear from you Jason.

Yeah, but in January I can add more clothes.

In August I can't walk around butt naked..... well I could but I don't want the locals to think I'm completely nuts :dizzy:

How's Big Ryan doing in the truck? Is he enjoying running the show?

Let's go hit the heat again.....woooo hooo

Nograss.... The Mulch Co. had their yard catch on fire a few months ago here in Knoxville. It was choking out the residential neighborhood surrounding them, and made the news several times.

For me, they are not convenient enough to utilize. And their pricing is only $1 less than most others.

I'm in the Boro southside. Just getting started part-time. Work full-time in LaVergne and do my lawn, my father's, my church's, and a friends. The friends is the only one I'm getting paid for and have been wondering if I can handle anymore right now with a 16 yr old in high school and working (she hasn't gotten her DL yet! ugh!) and a 8 yr old involved in everyting out there. We do a lot of child running. Oh yeah, did I nention my wife is in graduate school? All I know is that I love mowing, did it for 5 yrs in the mid 90's and am so happy to be back on a "real" mower. I too, deal with M'boro Kubota (Hustler MLT 16/42) and have found them informative and top notch.

If you don't do a single job of 25k or larger you don't need a state contractors license (if you do multible jobs for one customer that go over 25k you do not need a contractors license). To get a busness license just go to your county clercks office to get it (same place you renew your vehicle tags). In Sumner county it was $20.00 and painless to get. However, there personal tangable tax stuff with that later. They will explain all that to you when you get the license. As far as you record keeping you better talk to your accountant. Good Luck

It sounds like me and you are in the same situtation. I only mow about twenty yards a week and I sure didnt want to spend 8000 on a lawn mower. I really like my 225. I am also looking for a striping kit. I found this one website that carries them- www.bigleaguelawns.com. it seems like this is a very nice setup but i have yet to see someone put it on our mower. You may want to check into that for the stripes.

I am finally solo!!:clapping:

I used to manage a regional branch of a full service national company. We had an office here in knoxville, but were responsible for Western NC and this area. We did a large part of Turkey Creek, etc. (All commercial). We had about 12 branches in 6 states down the east coast, and 3 in Florida. We got bought out by Brickman this past June. I got tired of being bought by bigger companies (we were $23mil, they are like $600mil). That was my second buyout experience. I did not want to move again, so I went solo. After opening 4 branch offices in four different markets, I got tired of doing start-ups for someone else. Thought it was time to do it for myself.

They just closed the office here and took all my vehicles, equipment and stuff, but I got to keep all the clients I wanted. I kept about $230k worth of contracts, but gave some to some friends and ended up keeping about half of that for myself. I have no asperations of being HUGH. I just want to keep my current lifestyle and be less stressed out. So far so good!!

I have debated getting into the residential area, but right now I like working for myself. Atleast I know that the work is getting done right!:clapping:

Sorry for ranting!!!:dizzy::confused:;)

Sorry guys, I gave them away in June and July. But I'll keep you mind next go round!!

I am like you, Ben. I wish more guys here locally would not be afraid to share stories and experiences. We shouldn't be afraid of eachother, quite the opposite. We should be afraid of what will happen if we don't come together as an industry. I have seen what happens to a market that is oversaturated with service providers that have little or no experience. The end result is a bad taste in everyone's mouth. The customer expects the worst and pays that way.

If we all share our secrets (or most of them) then we all are on the same playing ground. The pricing is all within 3-5% and the customer's expectations go up, because everyone's quality improves. This inturn drives the prices up, not down. A lot of people out there feel they have to lower their prices to get the job. I would rather do a great job, and charge one of the higher prices. Unfortunately, there are too many customers that don't know what QUALITY is. Thus they just look at a person's price, not their quality.

Looking to work and network with others in my area. I'd prefer to stay in the Cheatham County area from Ashland City to Kingston Springs, but will accept Nashville area if profitable.

Ok, who am I kidding? I'd travel to Alaska right now if it was necessary.

I have everything we need to work up a nice business or to form a nice partnership or sub-contract situation:

- 2005 Exmark LazerZ Ultra Cut 52" (mulching kit installed but will remove if necessary) with Kohler 23 hp.

- 1994 Exmark MetroHP with brand new (not even five hours on it yet) Kawasaki FH430V 15 hp and velke.

- Stihl FS 80R trimmer.

- Robin FL500 blower.

- Stihl MS 290 chainsaw.

- Echo hedge trimmer.

- 21" Troy-Bilt push mower with 6.75 hp Briggs n' Strat.

- 14' flat bed double axle trailer with electric brakes on all four wheels. Hangers for trimmers and blower. Two "chainsaw" boxes.

- Great attitude and strong work ethic.

- Lots of experience (this is my fourth season) on residential yards.

Where I'm weak:

- I don't have the yards. The drought last summer pretty much wiped out an already losing venture as I was driving a hundred miles per day in and around Nashville.

- Truck. My truck is old and needs a lot of attention. It needs to be a hobby vehicle, at best, or a museum piece.

Let's get together and make each other some money!

Hi Lou, be prepared to be low balled. Nissan has just bought out almost 2,000 of the local people and the Peterbilt truck plant has all of it's UAW workers illegally locked out. There are a lot of people right now looking for jobs. Good luck with the move.

I have no problem with low ballers in the Franklin. Brentwood, Nashville area.
Have 83 yards with 35 the lowest. Tough break when gas went to $4, it really thru a wrench in the people that were scraping through, if they were trying to lowball. Some of them are not around.

I am really not worried about low ballers. I am legal here in ky....and plan to be in Tn. Its really stupid not to be if you are full time or doing more than the neighbors yard.
I have all the equipment I need....and plan on getting another scag tt. The exmark 48 Lazar is really nice but I need something bigger. I really only want to get about 30-40 maint. accounts this year. I do have a ? nograss.......Is it real rocky in the nashville area? I have been thinking about getting a trencher for my dingo. I might even get a plow if the soil is good. Do you guys buy from local wholesalers or go to mcminville for all your plants? Is there places to buy screened topsoil ???? Whats the rate????

I'd say a lot of the neighborhoods in the metro area will start early to mid march. Where I am in the rural areas it really depends on how early spring comes. Two years ago we ahd temps in the 70's and 80's the middle of march...then WHAM we had those overnight teens Easter weekend in April. I'd say you should have those postcards out no later than Valentines Day myself. Get your name in front of people early.

Tullahoma which is 1 hour south of Nashville. We grow and harvest trees and shrubs. Especially big ones.
