I'm in Murfreesboro all the time - I go to church there. I live in Mt. Juliet, but it's not very far from the new Nashville Superspeedway off of I-840. We do not cut any grass in Rutherford County, but have thought about trying. Let me know if you get more grass than you can handle..:D

Any of you guys in chattown use exmark I used to drive the 30 miles to dalton to use b&b tractor the place looks dumpy but Charlie knows what customer service is. I didn't even buy from him we bought our exmarks from tidmores (don't ever go there) but every time I had a problem B&B couldn't fix quickly he would give me a demo untill it was done. The one good thing about living in southern ga though you guys are wet and cold I just got back from running shorts abd tee shirt. Have fun GO VOLS!!!

Middle Tennessee is a great place, not so sure about west Tennessee. The lawn season in middle Tennessee runs from March till late December usually (Global warming does help!). Rains a lot here and that means more grass to mow and shrub trimming! :blob2:

Right now its pretty slow. My only business is blowing mulch products, so this time of the year will always be slow for me, but I am going out today to blow some mulch. I know several landscapers in the area are doing some landscape installs, others are doing clean-up jobs - of course, these have been a little difficult to do since we seem to be getting rain ever few days.

ccwmlw-Is that a RedMax trimmer on your avatar?

We service Harriman, Rockwood, & Kingston area. Been here 20 years, and lovin it. Have ya all noticed our state appears to not have a Lawn & Landscape Association, as does our neighboring states, it's not listed anyway with the others in Landscape Management. Do we have one? Often wondered about the "undercutters", makes it hard on us fellas who understand that it is necessary to carry CGL & Comm.Auto, updated equipment cost, business tax, commercial trailer tags, etc. but to force the issue, opens up a whole new can of worms. Moving back to the Positive, Hello to all you fellow lawncareians who sweat just as hard as we do here in the same great state of Tennessee.

Yeah, Superman told me he trademarked his name. I personally think its overkill, but what can ya do. I'm not changing it because of him....I'm changing it because of conflicting customers. We're both growing way to fast and I don't want my advertising dollars going towards his business. It's the best thing to do right now. How's business going for you? I'm sure you really picked up lately. Talk to you soon Jason...

Hello ya'll! :jester:

I'm an extreme newbie in Columbia, TN

I don't actually have any clients yet, haven't made up my mind if I want to pursue any yet either, but chances are good though.

Just bought a new eXmark Metro for my personal lawn. I found this site while shopping / studying. Had in the back of my mind the whole time I might search for some clients to do a cut-blow-n-go (maybe edge too). Right now I'm gonna just get used to my new mower for a couple of weeks and think about it.

West Knoxville here! Been in business for about 4 years and am slowly finding a niche with full maintenance of high end residentials; some install work; some retaining walls - still trying to figure out what I enjoy the most. Have done some holiday lighting - anyone seen the bradford pear tree at Aubrey's **** in Farragut this Christmas/NewYears? Strung with 2 1/2 miles of red minilights - 2 men 40 hours in a bucket truck! Dry spring this year - have been enjoying the lower humidity though.

Fescue Farmer.......got to love that name. Bet those lights were amazing! Would have never believed it could be a dry there, until my mom got back from there last night, (week vacation) and said it never rained. Rained here 2.2" in one day. Rained some everyday this week. Heavy at times, and supposed to be heavy/bad storms today.
Have a good 2004 season, Fescue Farmer. (post some pics of any Christmas lights you've done. (never get enough......favorite time of the year)

I told here she would have to get a bush hog for her back yard, then I thought for a minute, and said what the heck... I took the thing down there, stuck it in low, and it actually went through the grass... It was at least knee deep "no joke" I couldn't believe it, That thing is a mule... On the 4x4 I have made a trade We are taking me heads and builind a 383..... and he is going to use the 400 to race with....... hopefully she will be back up and running by next week "fingers crossed"

Well, you are a tad bit late...however, there are still jobs out there. One thing that might help are these cicadas. You might want to advertise during the 3-4 wks that the 17-year bug invades parts of Middle TN...who knows, if you do a good job you might get some permanent jobs. However, the reality is is that you probably will have to get a 2nd job...

If I were you, I would get a reliable second job that could support myself/family. Then put all of your lawn care profits back into the company. New mowers, upgraded trimmers, advertising....put it all back into things that will help your company. Then this fall you can advertise typical fall jobs and also start advertising early next spring... Just my opinion though, take it for what its worth...

I was encouraging one customer to go with a cut every ten days. He wants me call each time before I come (a renter no cash till Friday).
I just got his lawn under control and yesterday was his day for a cut, I call to confirm, says he doesn't think so and he's planning to cut it himself.

This might be a good question of "what would you do?" I'm expecting him call me back next week and want me to cut it. With this rain we had it will need bailing when I get done, IF I get a call and decide to go back.

imograss
05-15-2004, 01:46 PM
I can't stand customers like that. 10 day scheduling is hard for me to stick to under normal conditions let alone all wet days weve had lately.More often than not the lawn gets to high the customer then tries to cut it and quickly realizes he'd rather not do it. Then expects you to run over there and bale him out. I do have a few every other week yards but I don't like them. The ratiest lawns need cutting every week this time of year.

Lafrance,

We have inserted flyers for leaf removal over the past several years and have had an ok response - nothing phenomenal. Talk to Robbin in marketing - she is very helpful and gracious to the small business man. You can select different area codes to target certain areas; you can have an ad printed in a section of the paper; you can have a flyer inserted in the paper; you can advertize in some special publications that are bi-weekly or weekly that the KNS prints and distributes. Of course, the primer the ad spot the more $$$ you will need.

We have spent very little in advertizing, but what little experience I've had, I would say the inserted flyers got the best response over a printed ad in the paper.

I'll agree with both of you :) I hate wet leaves and rain during the leaf season. Is it just me or does it seem like there are many more leaves in TN than others talk about in their neck of the woods on lawnsite? Anyway, yea rain sucks because the grass still grows and the leaves get wet.

Its hard to believe its half way thru November already. We're starting to get geared up for next year when this year is not over yet. I hope eveyone has had a great year and I look forward to seeing all you guys (plus 200 more of us) out there at it again next year.

If there is anyone that does business in Murfreesboro and would like to get rid of there accounts, please let me know. I would love to beef up our route in this area.

God Bless and see you guys out there in the cold rain...

Het MowMoneyoo, what part of Murfreesboro are you from? I grew up in Rockvale. Went to Riverdale first two years of high school and went last two years at Eagleville where I graduated in 1991. Just going to see if we knew some of the same folks.

If you do i'll see you around some time. Later man, thanks for writing.....Happy Turkey Day everyone !!

Braxton,
My mom used to teach at Buchanan. My best advice is to advertise in the DNJ. We had so many calls last year we turned a bunch down because of other jobs.

Hey - to all you M'boro guys - where are all of you guys getting your fertilizer/pre-m products? I am looking at possibly carrying some Lesco products this spring at our store. In fact, I am getting a few bags of Pre-M/Fert and starter fert. just to see how it goes over.

Everyone is anxiously awaiting the growing season, that is everyone except me! I want one decent snowfall, to help prolong the cutting season. I am in the middle of finishing my winter mulchings and prunings, so the longer it waits for us in East TN, the better for me!

To weed wackers,
I went through an independent agent in the Murfreesboro because Farm Bureau did not have enough coverage. Try that route.

Thank you I will, Had already checked with Farm Bureau, State Farm, etc. Are you licensed as well? Sumner County tells me it is required. As I said we are just starting and want to do this the correct way but only have 2 commercial properties and 2 residential so far....but hoping for more than we can deal with. Carol

ccwmlw

Yes we are licensed. The 1st year it should cost some where around $20 because it is based on sales. Then it should go up as you sale more. Also remember at the end of the year you will have personal property taxes on equipment.

:D This is my first year in the business here in Knoxville, TN. Just bought a 52" Great Dane Gateway mower, and working on getting a good trailer with storage racks/box. I'm using an old rusty trailer now, LoL  .
Anyways, I jumped into the lawn business because the hospitality company I work for was recently taken over, and will probably be downsizing soon. Will also feel good to get away from the hospitaility industry and into one of the great outdoors industries.
This year I'll stick to the basics (mowing, edging, blowing, mulching & clean-up) until I get comfortable with taking on more. Hopefully, I'll be able to fully support myself by mid-summer or earlier. I'm targeting mostly residential because I'm getting such a late start this year, although I'll solicit commercial accounts whenever possible. If anyone has any accounts in or around west Knoxvile that they may want to let go of, please let me know.

We are in Morristown. This is our first year too. We are focusing on residential this year and bidding on commercial properties when that is an option. Glad so see some other "locals" on here. Good luck!

Ditto that for Goodlettsville or the west side of Hendersonville or upper Madison. We'll purchase or pay a percentage on decent accounts in those areas. Or if the accounts aren't so great and you want to drop them, we'll consider taking them over. e-mail pia8@bellsouth.net
