I need some help trouble shooting a Briggs Vanguard. It will only start if I disconnect the kill switch from the coils.

Sounds like there is any one or several of your safety switches making contact, thus grounding the juice from the coil and keeping it from going where it supposed to...Try disconnecting each switch, one by one, then reconnecting until you get the engine to start. Either adjust, or replace that switch...

Birdman:

What Vangard engine do you have, how many HP, and what is it installed on?

It doesn't really matter what engine you have on this one,
as the small wires to the coil/coils goes to the equipment's wiring,
and that connection goes to ground to ground out the ignition
and shut the engine off. It would be helpful to know what
equipment you have though. In general, check the seat safety
switch first.

It is a B&S Vanguard 16 HP -303447 Deutz Allis. I have tried all the saftey switches ( I think) To bypasss them , all you have to do is put a jumper wire across the plug, right? This all started when the ignition switch failed. (Key broke off) As for the switch switch, if you are not on the seat the engine will not even crank over, when you are on the seat the engine does crank .. just no spark.

Look at the prongs on the back of the original keyswitch,
you should find letters there somewhere, they should
match the replacement switch's letters exactly.
You can burn up your coils with the wrong keyswitch.
