It's an opposed twin 16 or 18hp Briggs. Probably 18hp. Old 4 chain Dixie Chopper.
circa 1982.

It's definitely a Briggs Twin 16 or 18, they're identical on the exterior. It is not the I/C version, though.
It's a 50" cut, BTW

Yeah. I think it may be older than my original guess of 1985, maybe 1982

It might even be one of the original 1981 Magic Circle mowers.

That's right! Dixie Choppers were (still are?) made by Magic Circle Manufacturing.
Anyone know when they first started making Dixies?

The first Choppers in production were built in 1981. There were a few prototypes built before that and were called Zippys, I think. The new Chopper I got has a sticker on it saying 20 years of Excellance, 1981 to 2001 which I think all the 2001 models will have. This is an old Chain drive Chopper, which is built by Magic Circle and I would guess it is a Briggs Engine. They did have some with an Onan, but that was in the 80's or very early 90's I think. Anyway, it looks like it's in good shape. My dealer still has some of these old ones and still uses them in his lawn business along with over 30 other newer ones. He has one with over 15,000 hours on it.
----------
Eric@ELM
The Grass is always Greener on the other side of my competitors fence

Were they called Dixie Choppers at that time? or Magic Cirle?

I guess i'm a little late on my post, but my guess before i read all the post was an chian drive '84 dixie chopper w/ a b&s twin cylinder engine.

As far as I know, they were called Dixie Chopper, once they started production and built by Magic Circle.
----------
Eric@ELM
The Grass is always Greener on the other side of my competitors fence

Many thanks to Eric for the background on Dixie Chopper.
This one is a 1983 model 5018. As you might expect from the model number, it was indeed a 50" cut as someone mentioned earlier with the Briggs 18 twin.
This particular machine just sold at turfquip.com for $995 and the previous owner swears this thing held hills better than a brand new Z Master.
I'm glad a few folks had fun with this thread. I'll do it again soon. Gotta make'em a little tougher though :)
Ed
