Just curious as to what kind of truck you all use and how big. i saw an f-250 for sale and i was wondering if this was too big, too small or just the right size for an average everyday lawn man? any input is appreciated.. merry christmas to everyone..

2001 Chevy 1500 long bed with tools mounted on sides. Tow a 6' X 10' trailer for mowers and grass. All works fine, I don't need any more.........yet!

also, what about 4x4's? are they better for towing?

I drive a 2500HD diesel 4 door, short bed, it's a good size I can tow anything i need. It all depends on what you need. how big is your trailer? do you plow? do you haul a 7 ton dump trailer? there are lots of guys that use rangers and that works fine for a 5x8 trailer with one mower but for a 24' enclosed it will not work.

I tow a 6x10 trailer with a Toyota 4RUnner......trailer and equipment are a little over 2500#. Tows fine......I also do light plowing with the 4Runner.....
I want a truck (it would have to be 4 door for the kids) but the money's not there yet and the wife needs a new vehicle first........

Lawn Wizards, it depends on which engine the Ranger has. If it's a 4 cylinder the truck will struggle to pull a 6X12 trailer that is loaded. THe V-6 would be better. I have a 3000 lb trailer and I was pulling it with a 4 cylinder S-10 so I do know.
I now have a 95 F-150 with the 5.0 engine and it pulls the same trailer just fine. And no, it's not the 5.0 in my avatar.

1990 Ford F250 ¾ ton, 351 V8 with 5 speed manual (gets around 10mpg around town with trailer, 11.5-13 on highway empty depending on how you drive it). Just a two wheel drive, standard cab, long bed plain jane truck. It has a bedliner and toolbox- could not live without the bedliner for this line of work and the toolbox is great to store stuff in if you do not have an extended cab. Now, I pull a 6.5x12 open trailer with it and the stuff in my signature line on the trailer and it does just fine of course (this truck can pull a whoooolllllle lot more than that if needed). This past fall I had all that equipment on the trailer and a leaf box on the truck, I’m sure the leaves weighed a bit when damp and shredded up well and packed together, but the truck hardly noticed it.
With the Ranger and that size of trailer I think your biggest concern is stopping it- used on a daily basis that would wear out the Ranger’s brakes and it’s not safe in sudden stops. I have no trailer brakes, but then my truck is bigger and heavier with beefy brakes so it is capable of stopping the trailer too, but depending on how heavy your trailer is, the Ranger may not be able to stop your rig “in time”. Try to find a trailer with brakes on it and put a brake controller in your truck. I think then you would be OK so long as you balance the weight with common sense. Yes bigger engines are faster to accelerate with, if you have a 4 cylinder it may get you by for a while but the 6 cylinder would be better of course :D

sounds like the truck is perfect for your needs. A buddy of mine bought a 93 Landcruiser to pull is operation around. Those are nice trucks.
Unless you need the power and size, nothing like the toyota line of trucks.

"93 Landcruiser"
I started out with a 97 Land Cruiser. Only problem was power and transmission heat (big tires, all wheel drive). I added the TRD supercharger and full synthetics in the driveline and it worked great, with the exception of fuel. I'd avoid them for daily use however, as any part that is for a Land Cruiser costs 3 times as much as a Tundra or 4-Runner.
We currently have 1 ton Dodge and Ford diesels. I feel that you get what you pay for (and we tow much more weight than just a 24" enclosed trailer so they work well for us).

That's gota be one of the most blatently uneducated coments I've ever heard. You obiously don't know what your talking about!
I own a 4cly and it tows just fine thanks.
4cly 2.8L duel overhead cam direct injection intercooled turbo diesel with a 12pound boost that pumps out 96KW @ 3500RPM at the wheels and 290NM of torque @ 2000 rpm.
I tow a 18' x 7' tandem with two Z's and the rest of the gear every day with absolutly no worries at all.
Ever owned or driven a 4cly Turbo Diesel before Richard?
I know all the F series fords and the big Chevs do a dam good job of towing and can tow with great ease...........I just want to let you know that SOME 4cly's can do it with great ease too.

By the way Pinnacle,
Bring over a toyota tacoma 4-banger(I'm sure that's what the original poster was referring to...not a turbo diesel). I have a trailer here that's LOADED down...and a nice STEEP hill around the corner.

Pinnacle: I had an old Isuzu 4-wd Diesel a while back. It only had around 50 Hp if memory serves me well. On it best day I would get up to 38 mpg. I would work that little truck to death and it would keep on going. It would surprise you in the amount it would carry/tow. I think the brakes were the weak point on that little truck. I wish we could get the little diesel trucks here again.

I believe he is talking about the gas burners. I don’t even think we can get the 4-cyl Diesel pick-ups in the states. Which there is a world of difference between the too.

Get the f250+ thats what i started with. Its a much heavier duty truck than a f150 or foreign toy and it can handle w/e you throw at it.

I have a 2002 Silverado K1500 with the 4.3 V6 and 5 speed. It does well pulling the mower and other equipment on the trailer, but when I put a good load of mulch on the trailer I can tell it is back there. At this time, it is enough for what I need. Here is a pic.

Hey Pinnnical, Often wondered why we did not have the smaller turbo diesels available over here. Several times overseas I had the pleasure to use them as work trucks. Most were Toyotas or Fords. Very manuverable, pulled like a full size V8, and were great on gas.

1988 ford f-250 4x4 w/a 460. with 7.5' x 9' dump bed. pulling an 8 1/2' x 20' trailer. unfortunately '88 was the first year for fuel injection on the 460's and last winter the engine was shot (burning about a gal. of oil a week) so i had it replaced. catch is, everything electrical involving the fuel injection system was bad too including the injectors. i spent nearly 4 grand on that engine and to this day it dosn't run right.
winter project: buy a carburator and new intake and convert it to old school fix-it-yourself-system.

This is a qoute from anouther member that might explain why they are not avalible in the US.
"I think the people in the states got screwed out of the little Diesel’s because they would have cost the Oil companies too much money. (It was blamed on the emissions being the reason they quit bringing them over.) But a lot of Politicians get big contributions from the oil companies."
