This is regarding a Poulan 2000 2.0c.i. 16" chainsaw (I know. . .its a homeowner saw but I don't do a lot of chainsawing).
History: Like new. It has always been maintained properly and has run great. Usually starts on the 6th pull cold, 1st hot. About 30 minutes worth of cut time ago, during which it ran flawlessly, I tuned it up (new spark plug, clean the air filter, sharpened the chain, topped off the fuel and oil reservuor, cleaned it).
Today I started it up, it ran great for about 4 minutes and then died. Knowing I didn't have much fuel in it, I went ahead and topped it off. Started for a few seconds, died. I went through this about 5 more times and then it wouldn't start at all. My arm was about to fall off so I gave up.
Here's what I've done so far: cleaned out the gas tank and put new fresh gas with some carb cleaner in it; put in another brand new spark plug; took apart the muffler to clean it but there was absolutely no carbon build up; inspected the fuel filter (the one inside the gas tank) and it looks brand new. None of this has made any difference and it still will not start even for a few seconds.
My guess: I think it is narrowed down to the carberator. I don't think it is getting gas. So here's what I did. I put about a Tablespoon of gas directly into the top of the carberator (through the hole the choke covers) and it will start for about 3 seconds and then die. Also, during these few seconds it idles very high. It will run a few more seconds if I give it about half throttle.
There are three screws on the carberator: idle screw, low speed screw, high speed screw.
Could dirt have gotten through the fuel filter even though it is in great shape? Is there a hole in the line? Should I try to adjust it or take it apart and clean it? Thanks in advance. Any help will be appreciated.
P.S. The On/Off switch was in the "On" position.
