Do any of you use or recommend after market oil filters for Kohler engines. I'm tired of paying over $7.00 for an oil filter. Fram, Purolator, Wix, and Napa have a substitute.

Thanks
Sam

I've been using a NAPA filter on my Kohler 25 for 5 years now. Still runs great. The only problem is the NAPA costs $10. But the Kohler is $12 and no dealers carry this kind anyways. Napa always has a couple in stock.

We always use aftermarket filters. They are all the same in my book. I only use known brands though.

I only use Kohler filters. Maybe they are the same. But I am not going to chance it.
I guess its that while I was in the car business I saw what kinds of problems can come from using aftermarket filters.
Ours had a double check valve system and the aftermarkets didnt.
They used cheapers filter material also. I just cant bring myself to chance it for just a couple dollars savings.

Although the Fram is $2.99, from the prices all of you are paying, guess I'm not paying that much after all. Think I'll just stick with the Kohler.

Thanks,
Sam

I use Hastings premium on all my machines.... Just make sure the filter is speced for that application so the by pass valves have the correct pressure and will work correctly and that it's a good quality filter.........

we use after market filters that are cheaper...it does suck paying twice as much for a name brand filter.....(aka) brigs, kohler, kaw
however filters are just important as anything the better filters remove more and smaller sized contaminants that cause engine wear. lots of people think a filter is a filter which in dont believe.
If it was up to me i would try to find the best filter to use not the cheapest

Wix, Napa and Car Quest are the same filters. The numbers are even the same except for the first 2 or 3. We run Wix and Napa on all our equipment from the mowers to the Dozers. Buy em by the case and save some cash. Our Napa and Wix dealer cut us a big break on filters. We now save over 50%. J-Thomas also has some good deals on filters.

I cross reference all my machines to Fram or A.C. I can get them on sale for about 2.50 - 3.00 ea.

Do you have the cross reference # for fram on the 22 to 26fi Kohler's?

I also run 2 Kohler 25hp and use Napa filters and they are made by Wix. The Napa # is 1348 (Wix is the same just add a 5 in front 51348) and they are only $3.99. There is a Wix filter that is the same as the 1348 (#1056) and it is actually what is supposed to fit the Kohler 25hp. It is EXACT to the 1348 except it is simply not as long and it costs approx $10. It's this simple - don't buy it, buy the 1348 if you have room to fit the longer 1348 filter (the 1348 is 3.404" long and the 1056 is 2.707" long). They spec the same. Same dia, bypass rating, o-ring dia, filter media, everything but the 1348 is actually longer so you get more filter media and much cheaper. Don't get caught up in the hype, you will NEVER have engine problems from a correctly spec'd filter. Use Wix made filters with the same bypass setting as the manufacturers filter and I personally guarantee (for whatever that's worth...) you will be fine.

Sam, just for your peace of mind I went to the wix website and confirmed that the 1348 and 1056 are exact in every spec except the length. The bypass rating is 8-11psi in both, both have anit-drainback valves, etc. Go look for yourself at wixfilters.com. Do yourself a favor use the best filter money can buy, and save yourself the $3, use the Wix 1348.

John, I have 3 Dixie choppers 2 w/ cv22s and 1 w/cv23, they both use fram ph3600, however I'm not sure if the fi engines use the same filter. If anyone out there uses Kawasaki FC420v's, they take fram ph4967 or ac pf1233. You can get any of these at wal-mart or anywhere else!!

Thanks for all the replies gentleman. Landcruiser, I will try the Wix filter next oil change. There are several auto supply houses here who stock Wix.

Thanks
Sam

Landcruiser, I sent you a PM. I don't know about the Wix filter, but the shorter Kohler filter has 32 microns and the longer one has 28.5

I sent Filter1 an email to find out the microns of the two wix filters mentioned.

Sorry for bringing up an old post, but this might be important info.
