Upper view of the wall. There is a drainage catch basin under the cobbles in the corner of the patio to catch the runoff from it. ANd the cobbles going down the side is to prevent erosion because it is so steep.

GMC had some major repairs recently. New head gaskets, injectors, and other items. Then the tranny went out. So here she is loaded up on the way to the repair shop.

Thanks again for the comments.

THe ditch witch has been great, very versatile machine.

We love the truck beds. Flatbeds are great for being able to sideload among many other things.

The GMC has about 180,000 on it now. We may have considered getting rid of it rather than putting money into fixing it, but we have a lot of money tied up in upfits. The flatbed isn't really transferrable for us because it is a 7' bed, and any truck we buy in the future will have 8' minimum. We also would have to buy plow hitch, etc. So we decided to fix it and hopefully get a few more years out of it. And it's nice to actually OWN a vehicle, not the back:)

Mowing division is good. We are still mainly doing lawn maintenance. Landscaping is a much smaller part of our business. We seem to give a lot of bids and get a handfull back. Maintenance work is easier for us to get.

Not yet on the ford. We just ordered one for the cummins, just have to install it. Got a smarty with egr delete.

We may do the ford if we like how the dodge turns out. Hate to not have warranty, but the regenerating sucks.

We'll have to consider the h&s, we almost went with that for the dodge, but didn't really want a screen in the truck.

Terra Grapplers are great...Ive got 12k on a set and cant even tell they have been driven on. I highly recommend them!

**Also, if you want to tune that Ford...I have a programmer for ya (listed in classifieds), you wont need a delete, and it will still regenerate, but after riding in this guys truck - I would have one...huge difference & wont effect warranty.

I found a mod friendly dealer where all the techs have modified powerstrokes. Mine has a 4" afe ss delete pipe, sb intake and hs tuner, guys have dynoed this combo and gotten 597hp and 1193tq at the wheels. Hs is the top tuner for the 6.4, some guys swear by spartan but the hs are more reliable. I also havea custom kem tune sd card that has a 345 tune that is wicked but i cant run it till i get ladder bars, way too much axle wrap...

Not really looking to add power to the trucks. We went a little crazy with the GMC back in the day, and swore we wouldn't do it again. It starts with a little power, then you get the tranny done, turbo, different tunes, etc. It's fun, but is just too costly!

You're not kidding about the snow. I guess we were lucky the last many winters to have decent snows. I can't take much more of this!

You have two sets of tires for the Kubota? Turf and Ag?

GLS
01-07-2012, 05:11 PM
Yeah, we purchased it with the industrial tires (R4) and later purchased a set of wheels with turfs. The industrials don't do terrible damage to turf, but the turf tires are far superior. We normally run the turfs, but switch over to the industrials for winter or when we are going to be in mud.

If we could go back, we would have ordered with turf tires and run them year-round. But it is nice to have the industrials on some occasions.

The WB does everything we need it to. We only use it on a handful of accounts these days (hills where the stander can't go). The cut is pretty good. Hopefully it'll last another 9 years for us.

EDIT: I see you meant the 21", not the 36". We got rid of that jx75 a few years ago. It was a decent mower, but the cut quality was not up to par, especially when mulching. We run the overpriced commercial toro units now.

How are the trucks running GLS? I'm curious about the Powerjoke 6.4 and the Cummins. How's the snow season for you guys?

GLS
01-31-2012, 03:07 PM
Trucks have been running good, but they haven't been seeing a whole lot of use.

Duramax had to go back to the shop for a minor repair. The flex plate was cracked which may have been a result of improper torque convertor installation, so we only had to pay for parts. All is good for now.

No problems recently out of the cummins or powerstroke. We did take some parts off of the cummins:nono:, she runs so much better now.

The dodge definately has the better powertrain IMO, both motor and tranny. Not that we've really have trouble with the powerstroke.

Snow season could be better. We have only made ONE full run (2"+), but have had a handfull of 1" and salt runs. So I guess it could be worse. I know it hasn't been good anywhere.

We were going to purchase wide tracks for the miniskid and a light materials bucket for the tractor (big mulch job this spring), but not sure the way this winter is going.

A.T.T.
01-31-2012, 03:45 PM
Glad to hear from you!

"We did take some parts off of the cummins." So you did the EGR delete? Thats good that you haven't had too many setbacks, sucks about the GM though. What bucket do you have on the Kubota now, I thought it was a light material bucket?

GLS
01-31-2012, 07:22 PM
The DPF, EGR, and EGR cooler are in storage now. Sucks to kiss the warranty goodbye, but we would rather stop sooting up the motor for when the warranty is gone.

Ford is staying stock to retain the powertrain warranty. We will likely sell it within 2 years (remaining warranty), so it isn't worth modding at this point.

The kubota currently has the 72" heavy duty roundback bucket. It is excellent for general purpose, holds a full load of gravel and other heavier materials about to full capacity.

Looking to purchase one of these berlon buckets for mulch and snow: http://www.berlon.com/pdf/mdhv.pdf . They have light duty, medium, and heavy.

Nice thread, suprised I didn't find this earlier.

Few Questions:
1. You started with one truck plowing. How did you feel about only having one truck, in case something happened mid snow season? I only have one right now, recently sold the unimount (it needed a new A-Frame slight twist and a cracked) But looking into buying another (still have the truck side).

2. I was throwing up the idea of either dump insert or flatbed on my K3500 SRW. Whats betting in your opinion dump insert or straight up flatbed? After reading your thread I'm leaning towards dump insert thinking it would be more handy with fall clean ups and material handling. Unfortantly I don't think I can swing for a dumping flatbed.

Thanks

GLS

We still like the GMC. It has been a great truck over the years. We are hoping to keep it in service for years to come. Our eventual goal is to replace it with a dodge medium duty (4500 or 5500). But that is down the road.

Back when we only had one plow truck, we didn't have very many accounts. Mostly just driveways that could be cleared by other means. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable with no backup machines now. I would make sure you have a backup plan incase there is a breakdown if you are doing commercial properties.

I would definately go dump insert over a stationary flatbed. Dump ability is very important to us.

Thanks. I've just didn't want something happen and wreck the business name right away, if my truck was newer or if I was the original owner might have been a different story. Didn't want to gamble unless I had a back up, mainly if the trany went out without a back up, snow waits for no mechanic. But this year seems horrible for snow.

Great work and thread. Love your deck over trailer. Who is the manufacturer and is that dovetail hydraulic or something to see go from the dovetail to flat in pictures?

GLS
02-07-2012, 09:41 AM
Thanks. The trailer is a B-B by Bhenke Enterprises (http://www.behnkeenterprises.com/). It is the same brand as our dump trailer. We've been very pleased with them.

The dovetail is simply mechanical. It is spring loaded (there is a leaf spring underneath) and you just pull a couple of pins, raise the tail, and a couple of metal blocks swing into place to hold it. Very simple and effective.

Actually, that pile fit with room to spare! We didn't even have to untarp and stomp them down like we occasionally do.

You should try mulching them as their being sucked up. What i do is have one guy mulch the pile of leaves before it gets sucked in and re-mulched. You would be amazed how less space it take up in the trailer. That one pile would be 1/5 of the size after mulching it. I use a 21'' mower that i dont use anymore. A pile that size would take about 5 minutes.

GLS
02-08-2012, 10:01 AM
A lot of our larger accounts get collected with a ztr, then re-collected through the leaf vac. You are right that it takes up much less trailer space. However, we find it faster in most cases to suck loose undisturbed leaves. The mulched leaves take a lot more effort to suck. And so long as the trailer will last the day, we're happy. Thanks for the idea though.

Yeah no kidding! I'd be doing that too, GLS do the piles where you dump get burned every so often or used for something else?

GLS
02-10-2012, 06:37 PM
Yeah, if we had to pay per volume I'd definitely pack in as much as possible. We do pay to dump on occasion (when it's too wet to get to our dumpsite), but it is per ton not cubic yard.

We don't burn the leaves, they just sit and compost. The piles reduce drastically in size over time. Past attempts at burning were unsuccessful, just not enough airspace. They just smolder. We may harvest some compost out of it someday.

Here is another shot of our dumpsite. We stack it up with the tractor, it settles throughout the year, and we do it again the next fall.

The kubota has been great. We haven't gotten much use out of it lately due to severe lack of snow (9" officially, only one storm over 2"), but it's been out a few times. Zero issues with the machine. It does exactly what we wanted it to, i'm a satisfied customer.

Whats new and exciting!? :)

GLS
05-02-2012, 12:58 PM
Not too much.

Spring came EARLY this year! We had a stretch of 80 degree plus days that really greened the grass up. We started mowing about a month ahead of normal.

Made one new purchase. Bought a Toro 48" hydro floating deck walk behind to replace the old 36" deere. We wanted a bigger deck for hills and wanted to upgrade to a hydro. It's been working out really well. We were going to keep the deere as a backup, but I think we are going to try to sell instead.

Been very busy with various other projects too. We are in a wet spell right now (rained like the last 4 days with rain chances daily for the foreseeable future) so we are way behind on mowing.

Getting caught up on paperwork right now. Better get back to it (i HATE paperwork!)

I'll try to get some spring pictures up when I get a chance

That would be great, good to hear from you.

We're in the same boat with the start of the season, early and lots of rain. I hope everything straightens out for you, especially the paper work!

Thanks for all the comments. After a lousy winter, we were fortunate to get a very early start on work. Work has been very steady so far. By the time we get caught up on mulching and other landscaping work, it will be bush trimming time and another round of lawn apps. That should keep us busy through june.

Yes, those toros do get a workout. That new one seems to be a gas guzzler, but thats probably. Ecause were used to the diesel ztrs, they really sip the fuel.

I'll have some more pics to load later (mostly landscaping), i ran oit of time to post them all.

Are you talking about the walk behind using a lot of fuel?

GLS

Yeah, it seems like it anyway. I guess it only has a 5 gal tank though

What kind of fuel usage do you notice? How many hours does that 5 gallons last?

how do you like the ztr style controls on a walkbehind?

GLS
05-10-2012, 09:27 PM
I'll have to keep track of the fuel/hours next time we fill.

The controls come naturally. They are basically the same as our wright stander. I have never used a different type on a hydro walk, so i cant compare. Did demo a ferris 52" wb, horrible control system! Anyway, i like the controls.

Nice equipment. How often do you wash/clean the decks and how often do you sharpen your blades? Keep up the nice work.

GLS

Our mowing equipment is seldom actually washed (every once in a while). The decks get scraped based on "juiciness" of grass... Sometimes thats daily (or more), but usually every week or two. We try to change to sharp blades weekly, but sometimes it doesn't happen for 2 wks. Probably should do it more often.

Brought big orange along on this one due to long distance mulch transportation. 17mph +/- beats the 3-4 mph on the miniskid for the long trips.

Back at the "shop" doing some routine maintenance. These 18V impact drivers work great for blade changing. We actually got this one free many years ago with the purchase of a combo set. Glad we got it, never would have thought it would work this good.

How many yds of mulch fit in that trailer ? The grass looks like the same stuff we have been dealing with. Looks like the Toro's handle it fine. Looks good

Yes, snapshot for landscape beds. We go through quite a bit of it. Other bags are lawn fert + dimension. We are now done with "step 2 - broadleaf weed control", so we will be moving on to our next round of fertilizer soon.

The trailer will hold 12-14 cu yds of mulch (depends who loads it and what they consider a "yard").

Lawn chair is pretty old, probably 15+ years. I don't know if you can even get that type anymore!
