Hustler Turf Equipment is looking for your input.
We are in the process of redesigning our current fuel tanks we use on our commercial riders, such as the Hustler Z, Super Z, Mini Z and Super Mini Z.
We are looking for you to vote in a poll in this thread.
The Question is…..
In a fuel gauge on the new fuel tanks would you rather have:
A - a mechanical “dial” type indicator gauge
Or
B - a translucent “strip” or “sight line” in the tanks so you can see the exact level of the fuel. (you would be able to see this from the operators position)
These are the two options please vote above.
We look forward to your input.
Thank you

In my opinion the mechanical guage would be the best and here's why. Just think about trimmers, blowers ect. w/ tanks that are visible. They don't stay that way for long until you cant see through the tank, at least this is the case with me. I think a sight line on the tank will only be effective for a short time.

as long as the translucent strip won't yellow in less than a year. Pluss the tank is dark inside, might be good if it stuck out a little to let light in. Kind of like a 'clear straw'.

I chose B, because i have found after a while the "dial" type guages are not as accurate. Its better to actually see the fuel in my opinion.

Would like the (B) option! the gauges cant be read after some time in the sun most turn brown. Also got the kit yesterday and I like it alot, easy install, want to get to some fescue to mow with it.
Thank you

I like the mechanical fuel gage idea. I think the sight line would fade with time requiring tank replacement to repair. The mechanical fuel gage would probably be easier to repair if it should fail. I would like to see a design that could be fitted to existing mowers that don't currently have a gage.

The sight line would be better, mechanical gauges never seem to last.

I voted -B- because you can see the fuel. It goes with the keep it simple rule. That is as long as it will not discolor (rendering it useless!) I got an idea!!! Why not make the mechanical gages available as an option? Then if the sight glass ever discolored you could purchase the mechanical when needed. Just a thought.

PJ,
My friend's Ferris has a translucent tank and it's great. I don't know what the cost difference is, but you may find it's cheapest to have a fully translucent tank, instead of a stripe. BTW, the machine is 9 years old and has not faded. I'd go with the stripe or complete see-through tank.

Sounds like a good idea to me!
I voted for B only because I think a translucent strip would fade and be hard to see. I don't really like the cap/guage ones either though.
How about having an automotive style guage? Mount a guage next to the hour meter or wherever controls are located. It would be awesome if it worked and didn't cost half a grand :)

Don't need a guage with the present tanks, fill up every morning before you start, more than enough to last all day. A gas guage is just another unnecessary added expence to the over all cost.

at first I thought the window would be good but now I think the gauge in the cap would be better. Just because It would be an easy retrofit to older machines withthe same size cap right?

The gauge would not be in the cap.

Why not both?

Based on PJ's last statement about not in the cap, I think that more info on "A" is needed to really answer this question.
To vague.

Go with the translucent strip. Hustler builds its stuff simple and it lasts, so don't put something mechanical on your mower that can break if you don't absolutely have too!

If it was one choice, it would be "B". (could never fail, if it didn't discolor) I would like it better if it had both, but I like guages.

What ever you do, make sure it reads from each tank. Even though the fuel comes from both tanks, don't eliminate one.
Those red mowers only have the guage on one side.
But, thinking from the seat, the strip would have to be seen from there. The guages might be easier to see from the seat.

Everyone is giving an opinion, but nobody has the facts. How is it possible to answer without knowing what is really being talked about???

the fact is Hustler designs their equipment to be simple and easy to work on.
the fact is that a thin translucient strip works on oil cans.
the fact for me is simple is better.
flyboy got it right.

People, get off your butts and simply open the fuel cap to observe the fuel level!!! Yes its just that easy. Why add more costly ineffective gadgets that only work for a short period of time anyway. Just fill the stupid thing in the morning and you'll never have to worry about it.
Thanks...

Other manufacturers have been using use the translucent strip for years and fuel level is still visiable.
