For just few dollars and some labor your old Toro gear drive walkbehind can have better ground speed and smoother steering reactions.

The older Toro belt drive have a traction belt adjustment that is just an idler pulley in a slot. This shortens the life of the trans input bearings if you adjust too tight
and ground speed is effected when this adjustment is a little loose.

What I have done on my older units is to change the adjustment to the idler arm and spring type found on the newer walkbehinds. This increases belt life, ends the need for manual adjustment, and provides a more consistent and efficient power transfer from the engine to the transmission. This modification is a must when using a sulky with a belt drive.

Here are the part numbers needed:

16-7509 idler lever
68-2190 spring
27-6230 bolt
62-4540 pulley

Sounds like a good idea. About how much did the parts run? Is the pulley different from the fixed idler type? Just replaced that pulley; hate to buy another if not needed.
Thanks
