That's exactly how I do it. As I pass a lawn that is in need of some TLC, I drop it in their mailbox.I have hung them on doors in the past and had too many people see me coming and assume I was going to feed them some sales pitch and stop me half way not wanting to hear any explaination. On the flyer I start off the body of information by saying "For your convenience, I placed this information in your mailbox for you to read and discuss at your leisure". Lets them know that I am expanding the business but more importantly, that I respect their time and it usually gives them a nice fuzzy, warm feelin' inside knowing that i'm lookin' out for them...hehe..Good Luck

Both of you use the search feature on the top of the page look up the word mailboxes and read the posts. There are several dozen guys here who have been fined and given court appearances for doing just that. I don’t agree with the law but it is clearly against the law and only a matter of time before they nail you.

When I first started out I was putting fliers in mailboxes. The # of calls I got was minimal but thats the only way I could afford to advertise and get customers,,especially since I was in a town where I did not know anybody. Long story short I got a call from the postal service one day and she said that one of the mail people took all of my fliers out (she told me the exact # I had put out) and that she would let it slide this time, but the next time I would get fined 37cents for each flier (it may have been 34cents, but whatever the postage rate was at the time) Therefore, I would not reccomend doing this.

Adurham, listen to the guys.. as always Our Government is out to get money. notice they have no problem with you direct mailling your flier thru the mail at 37 cents a pop. But when you do it, it cuts into their profits, and they will fine you. Either go door to door and introduce yourself(your company) or put the fliers on the doors. it may be a little more work, but the U.S. POST OFFICE WILL NOT TOLERATE You hitting the mailboxes.

It's a Federal offense with up to 10 years in prison if you keep on doing it.
Don't put on or in the mailbox. Also if you are going around the city putting up fliers check with the city for a permit. Ours here is caused a peddlers permit.

to my knowledge it is illegal to touch (put anything in/on) mailboxes, it is considered federal property.

Gonna quit my job and start a Lawn Care Business. Gonna use this set-up for my first year and save for one of them there loud mowers. :D
It's not against the law to fold a flier up and put it behind the flag, you just can't open the box and put it inside. I don't do fliers but my father-in-law does with his power washing business. I have been lucky enough so far to not have to advertise at all, but trying to stay small right now.

i have heard you can't touch any part of the mailbox or post period.
never got in trouble for it though. i figure i will continue to do the flyers until i get a warning, then i'll stop.
in my experience, flyers are good for about 5 new long-term customers per 1000. yellow pages is a waste of money.
i posted this somewhere else, but will put it here too.
if you do flyers make sure they will stay on the box in a good wind. if not, you will have signed your name to a bunch of litter in a neighborhood. that is terrible for your company.

To be clear: As a former postal worker! Not on the box,not in the box,not behind the flag, not on the post! It's all off limits, anywhere in the U.S.A. !!!

Why don't you just pay someone. Maybe it is expensive elsewhere, but here in Cedar Park, TX (north Austin) most companies charge 11 cents a flier. For our current distribution, 6000, it will be less. They will do it in 1-2 days. We paid $165.00 for 1500 fliers and they got passed out in 3 hours. They started at 9am and finished by noon. We had two customers by 6pm. We ended up with 20 customers on those 1500.
Pay someone, it is worth it. And yes, I have tried doing them myself. Buy some good tennies! :D

get caught doing it.......your reputation will suffer. Image means a lot in this industry. Do things legal, it will pay off.
I made a mistake already this year and have fixed it. I advertised a service that I can not perform legally. I took it out of my advertising right away. It was more embarrassing than anything. I hate being unprofessional. Illegal = unprofessional
