I am looking into putting in a new lawn for a customer, and I was wondering if there would be any problems with putting down a layer of compost (instead of topsoil) under the new sod?

No, I do not think you will have a problem. The only think I would recommend is to put a thin layer of compost (maybe 1/2 inch) if you do not plan on tilling it in. This is due to the fact that you could see a layering effect if you put a thicker amount w/o incorporating it in. If you do plan on tilling it in, you can put 2 inches down and till it in 6 inches. I have put 1/2 inch down before and it did wonders - a lot depends on the quality of compost you have though.

Remember that compost is organic and will completely disappear in time. So if you added it to a depth of two inches today, it will be zero inches deep in a year or so.
