MTD makes homeowner models,I wish you luck with it,If you are doing your own lawn with it-fine,if you expect it to hold up commercially-well you better have a good backup mower, and a lot of patience.
----------
John D
I posted before about the lemon I have from MTD Pro. Now that you have it you might as well use it, but for everyone else; NEVER BUY MTD PRO!
Why you ask?
Mine is 1 yr old and has:
-had the deck broken off in under 50 hrs
-shredded 2 of 5 gears
-broken pulleys
-missing parts
-blown gasket
-delivery times for parts is never under 1 month
-trips to dealer to get stuff fixed < 7 >
1 hr each way
- 5 week wait with no mower because gasket was not in stock
And you think I would of learned my lesson but instead I traded the lemon in on a 18 hp
48" widetrack hydro.
Got it home and put 1 hr on before boom and white smoke everywhere. Wires on fire.
Returned it and they gave me another one.
2 days and 30 hrs later (playing catchup) boom and white smoke and more fire. They tell me the timing was great because the first one was just about fixed. I tell them they can keep their mowers and I'll take my money back.
Mtd Pro will never get my approval.
Dylan

We have one and not have that bad of luck with it. I would never buy one again but it is not the worst mower out there. I will only buy Exmark from now on. We have had great luck with them and until something happens that changes my mind I will not buy any other mower. As for probs getting parts if you need something give us an email and we can give you the guys # we got ours from, we had to get a part for our exmark and they cost the least and got it there the next day. I think it all the dealer which you choose in how your service is handled.

lawnboy - Not trying to bash you or anything, but why do you buy the machine first, than ask about it? If you have 8 hours on it, you obviously used it. What do you think about it? Its kind of late to get opinions on the machine after you buy it! Theres 1000 people here to help you, just ask! Plus use the search feature on the site and you would have came up with a lot of (negative) opinions on MTD's products. Hope its working out for you, even though I won't support that name brand!
----------
"guido"
David M. Famiglietti

Hey Dillon, most of your trouble seems to be engine or transmission related with your MTD mowers. Well, you can't blame MTD for that, because they purchace the same Kawasaki motors and Peerless transmissions that EVERY other walk behind on the market uses. All the same....they just bolt em on like all the other companies. Did you put the oil in? Check the level? Put your most
destructive employee on a new machine? I am sorry but bad motors and gears being torn out of transmissions sounds like operator abuse to me. Either way,not MTD's fault. Maybe you should have bought yours from Lesco. We have two of the gear drive walks
with the 15 horse Kawasaki v-twins, and they are great machines. We use the Jungle wheels with both machines, and have GREAT service from them. By the way, when on rare occasion I have needed a part, Lesco has it for me the next day, at the store.
I think these mowers get a bad rap from people who have never used them, or even set eyes on them. It's like a kneejerk reaction ....."MTD? Oh well it must be a piece of crap." Yes they are heavy, but that is because the cutting deck and the engine deck are made out of heavier gauge steel than most others on the market!! Who else uses a 7-gauge steel engine deck? NOBODY, that's who. IT is heavy because it is made like a tank, there are more materials there, so yes it should be heavy. By the way, why would that be a minus anyway? When was the last time you had to lift one onto a trailer?
Just had to add my 2 cents worth, here. Every one was dogging these machines, but I doubt all of them have ever owned one or even used one. Yeah, MY LESCO's are made by MTD. NO they are NOT homeowner models. These machines are as commercial as commercial gets. Made solid, made tough and made WELL! Just for reference, I have a friend who uses toro ONLY. Two machines bit the dust on him out of the crate. He has had problems with the thin decks on them, and parts are HIGH for toro!! And if I am not mistaken, toro has an entire line of cheesy-electric discount store yard tools they pump to the masses. Don't see a lot about that on here, do we?
Hey, every body has experiences they can share here and we can all gain from that. But just be FAIR when you do. Blaming mtd for your transmission problems as well as engine problems is not fair. They do not manufacture them, they purchace them like every other company does. They just bolt them on.

Lake Gaston is right on! My Lesco 36" which ya'll have termed "junk", has been 10 times more reliable than my Dixie Chopper (Sorry Eric). My Lesco is a year older (98 versus my 99 Chopper). Nothing wrong with the Lesco with over 400 hours and 1 blown head gasket, 2 new hydro pumps on the Chopper- 450 hours. It all boils down to how you treat the machine. Even Exmark is going to have some problems but I have been very impressed with their track record on here! Just wanted to share my experience. By the way tons of guys here use the Lesco stuff and I have heard very few complaints (except the Viper----stay away from this contraption).

quoted from lawnboyIL "well the partner went and bought it they dont tell me these things"
Do you really have partners? How many? You say THE partner bought it and THEY don't tell you "these" things. Are you sure?? If you made a mistake, you don't have to cover it up with the old "my buddy did it" excuse. And I don't think anyone needs a 36" that much that they'll pay $4500 for a used one. This forum is a great asset to anyones business but don't waste space w/ bull$hit ads like yours "just to see how bad they wanted it" USE YOUR HEADS GUYS!!!
----------
<a href="http://communities.msn.com/guidosequipmentpics/">"Guido"</a>
David M. was just reading through some old threads and came across this one. i bought brand new lesco hydro mowers 3 years ago and they are still running strong to this day....only thing i have done is belts and a few tires but thats excepted. i have tried, snapper, JD, bobcat, bunton, goodall, toroe and Dixie. Dixie and lesco are the only companys i will buy from when it comes to mowers

I bought a used lesco belt four years ago and its been a great machine. a little of this, a little of that and no real complaint.

we are rural here and I get a lot of tough cuts that a lot of people wouldn't touch. the ole lesco has cut them all.

I'd say the jury is still out on the newest lescos. I'd buy another one like mine in a second.

For the people defending MTD most of us have had problems. We tried a product from them and have learned. Not trying to bash them. I have a few MTD snowblowers. They were cheap real cheap. They arent horrible just not built super tough. I blew a transmission from running over newspaper. Should this happen I dont think so but. I believe MTD uses less quality parts.

The THREE Mtd Pro machines that I had, had problems right from the dealer. The forth one that I have now, courtesy of Mtd is holding up much better. I am pleased with it. I only had one problem with the new one and that was a kill switch not working on the first day.
Perhaps the first three were lemons. Couple that with poor service from a dealer, no parts from the manufacturer and you have a problem. I know the trans and engine are not made by Mtd but they and their dealers should be stocking parts or getting them in a reasonable amount of time. I'll ignore the remarks about putting oil in, etc. As for the broken deck, idler pulley mounts, and the list goes on, those parts are Mtd made and they broke.
I have used 4 of Mtd's products over the span of 2 years and demoed their other products. I know I have tried their product and am not just offering a "kneejerk reaction" to the name Mtd.
I am glad your lesco's are working out, but everyone's experiences are different and I was sharing the problems that I had run into.
