View Full Version : Tilling rates...

I just did a search and didn't find much in the way of tilling info. I'm interested in seeing how much sq. footage you guys can get done in an hour with your tiller. I'm most interested in front and rear tine tillers. I'm getting a new tiller this season, so I want to get a feel how to estimate how much i can do in an hour.

Man there is an awful lot of variables here. Soil type, rocks, what you're trying to accomplish by tilling, and type of tiller. A rear tine will go faster in untilled ground, but size and brand of the rear tine makes a huge difference. I use a 8hp BCS, which is the best of that size that I have tried. I have rented a 16 hp rear tine which was awsome.
Sorry to be so vague, but the variable list is long.

Ok, consider this into it: 8hp rear tine, clay soil, no rocks (besides an occasional river rock), goal is to till approx. 6 inches (want to incorporate existing soil with new imported top soil/compost for planting beds)
Brand: not sure what is best, whatever you use
If this was a front tine, then it would be a 5 hp engine (or whatever recomendations you may have)
Hopefully that can help with the vaiables
