How many of you guys use a spool rack permanently attached to your trailers for your trimmer line? TrimmerTrap makes one - but I'm thinking of making my own....anyone done that?

I made one for my enclosed trailer, just got some flat metal bent into a U shape, drilled to hole near end and ran a large bolt through spool to secure. With a large roll of line I only have to change about every 6 months, total cost $3.00.

Check out the one that Green Touch makes. (www.greentouch.com) Around $25.00, cad-plated steel, works great, I have used several.

I thought about putting one on my rig but am afraid of it unwinding while going to down the road. Sure would be a liability if it happened. How do you guys keep that from happening?

I too have one on my gear caddy rack. I just put a rubber band around the spool and slip the end of the line under the band. Been doing it this was for a while and never have had the line unwind.

I have a tiny hole in the side of my spool of line that keeps it from unwinding

The rubber band is a good idea. However, I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

NCSU, do you just loop the end of the string through the hole or do you have a special thing you do?

just put the end through the hole and pull it tight. I leave about 6" hanging down. It never unwinds

I don't have a spool rack. However, I have three extra line trimmer heads loaded up and ready to go for two trimmers. They were only a few buck a piece.

When I run out of line in the middle of a yard I just walk back to the truck, open the toolbox, and replace the trimmer head. I'll worry about adding trimmer line after the day is over to any of the empty trimmer heads. BTW, I think it cost me less than 5 bucks a piece. Not sure of the exact amount.

Where the heck did you see $100 spool holders??

I've put off getting one for the same reason ****** mentioned. Plus I wanted one that has a cutter built right in. I just recently saw an ad for one with this feature, but I can't remember where I saw it. Oh well, I'll find it, but it may just be easier (and cheaper) to build my own.

How much trimmer line do you know to pull off when it's time to reload your spool? I either get too much or not enough. Thoughts?

The greentouch timmer line holder works very well and it has a bracket to hold your trimmer line so it doesn't come unraveled while cruising down the road. Cost about $25

Get the one from Green Touch for $25, add a short piece of small chain for $1, add a small , cheap pair of cutters $3, tie wrap the cutters to the chain, hook the chain to then line bracket. Under 30 bucks, works great. As for how much line, for me , usually about 3 hand to hand stretches will fit on a spool.

Depends on which spools/heads you use. Some hold more then others. I go about 5-6 hand to hand stretches for mine.
