Has some extra time this week and so left over unistrut from another job. So I built a tailgate. Its ugly and big, but works well. Is so big, I had to build a gate assist. Thanks for all the ideas on the assist.

This is the assist. I used the search and came up with almost all the plans. It is almost not enough, I may add a second one if I get the time.

I think it turned out good for the first try. I learned alot and will make the next one better.

I put in lots of supports because I still want to be able to drive the jeep you see in the back up on the trailer without taking the trailgate off.

Wow, good job. I need to put a new gate on the back of my trailer so that the guys won't tear the lawn mowers up loading and unloading them. The bottom of the decks scrape the trailer gate if then dont lean them back.

Great job......I need to do the same.

You might want to make the pipe your assist spring is in, a little longer so that the spring is covered when fully extended.....

Also you can put a cap on the end and drill a hole for the cable to completely encase the spring for protection if it were to fail.

You probably already knew that though....

Nice job. I see you built a six footer to get your walkers over the edge without scraping the blower. I was forced to do the same. My tailgate ways 350#.

Tim, for the next one instead of adding the extra supports for the jeep I would just put a leg on the middle of the gate instead. It will lighten up the gate for everyday use.
I use my trailer for my Ford tractor and just throw a block of wood under the gate and it doesn't bend at all. Makes for a much lighter gate.

Thanks for the tip. Great idea. I will keep that in mind. It is a SOB to get up. Loosing two supports would drop it about 35 pounds or maybe more. Thanks again. Tim

Nice job. Next time you might want to try torsion springs between the bed and gate. Similar to a liftgate setup. Works well for us. Looks good though.

Could you show me a picture of a torsion spring setup? Tim

Your gate is big, but I might have you beat. I have 2 360# springs to help out on lifting mine.

Laying on the rail just in front of the supports.

You can kinda see on this pic. I only needed one spring, untill I had my gate lengthened (the unpainted part) But I definately needed the other after it was all said and done.

Two springs are really what's needed. It will take some of the load off the other and they may stay in the tubes. The roller looks similar to mine, it works great. The cap is a good idea if you can get it set so the spring dosen't come out the end.

That is a nice gate. I remember the good old days of mowing (actually not all that good) we had this trailer with a huge gate and I mean huge. Acctually it is still sitting out in back of one of the whearhouses. It honestly took two people to lift it. there was no way one person was going to lift it. I will try and get a pic of it up. But back on topic that is a good job you did on the gate. Could never have done that quality of work myself!!

Thanks guys. It was fun to work on. I have added a second assist and it is sweet. One hand to lift it now. I tested the gate out with my jeep and it worked great. No sag.

I am now working on my blower and trimmer racks. I am having trouble figuring out how to protect the handles of the trimmers from getting banged up by the metel. I sprayed them with a spray on bed liner. That didn't work because the trimmer rubbed it off after a few days of driving it around town. Any ideas?

I haven't done this yet ( I haven't got my racks built yet) but I intend on going to an electrical supply and getting some large heat shrink for mine. I think that it will work. You're welcome to try my idea. If it works let me know.
