I currently don't fertilize, but want to offer it to new and old customers. I was recommended a guy by my accoutant. He fertilizes, but he also does maintenance. I'm supposed to meet with him next week to discuss. We will sign a no compete contract if we work together. Have any of you guys run into problems doing this or should i try to find someone who just does fert.

IMHO.. find someone who just does fert. Better yet find someone who will do just the pest apps. and do the fert yourself.

Ditto that. Not only will he not compete for your maintenance customers he will send you business as well.

Just work something out with a fert only guy if you know a decent one and refer eachother. My old boss had 3 guys he would refer he picked up about 10 way over priced accounts out of about 30 estimates they refered in one year.

i do this with a local fertilizer only guy. Very nice man. I new him for 1 week and had already referred me a $600.00 clean-up job! easier for me to concentrate on other parts ofthe business without worrying about licenses, over spraying, having all the equptment, and product.

Thats the way I do it, and it works out best. That way theres no competition, And if theres a problem, cut it too short, or too long, ect you can handel it with him not the customer.

I wouldn't do it, wait until you are prepared to do it yourself. We referred our customers to a friend and after a few years he began to cheapen his quality. Our customers got ticked off at US for referring him and requested that we do the work ourselves. We are no longer good friends because OUR customers came back to us on their own and he thinks we stole his business.

Auburnguy if your not comfortable spreading fert yourself dont but subing it to a guy who also cuts sounds foolish. I spread fert ,lime and grass seed myself however any customer that wants weed control gets refered to the Lawn Doctor or Chem Lawn thoes guys appreciate the referals and they also return the favor since they dont do any cutting.

Lbilawncare, just because something turned sour for you doesnt mean that you should talk bad about something that not only works well, makes money, and increases customer satisfaction for others. We all have to start somewhere...
